Katie Taylor Embraces Quiet Life After Marriage and Boxing Break
Olympic and world champion boxer Katie Taylor has revealed that she is enjoying a quieter life in Connecticut with her husband, Sean McCavanagh, following her decision to take a break from boxing earlier this year. In an appearance on the Late Late Show with Patrick Kielty, Taylor discussed her recent marriage and the shift in her focus away from the ring.
Life Beyond the Ring
In July 2023, Taylor earned recognition as a “Champion in Recess” by the World Boxing Council after her significant victory against Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden. This win marked the conclusion of their trilogy, and shortly thereafter, she confirmed her hiatus from competitive boxing.
Reflecting on her past dedication to the sport, Taylor admitted that her commitment left little room for personal relationships. “Since I was a teenager, I’ve been so focused on boxing, I left very little room for relationships,” she shared. “Honestly, even the thought of a relationship was out of the way for me, so it’s lovely that love snuck up at a later stage in my career.”
Despite relishing her time away from the sport, she acknowledged the challenge of adjusting to a different routine. “I have to actually put in the effort not to train like I’m preparing for a fight,” Taylor noted. She described her life with McCavanagh as “lovely and quiet” and expressed gratitude for this new chapter.
Reconnecting with Family
This marks the first time in two decades that Taylor has taken time off from boxing. Her journey in the sport began at age 15 when she participated in Ireland’s first sanctioned female fight against Alannah Murphy in 2001. Currently, she is back home for the Christmas season, allowing her to reconnect with family and friends—a rarity she treasures.
Taylor has expressed a renewed closeness with her father, Pete Taylor, who was her coach until they parted ways in 2015. “That’s family isn’t it, it can be both complicated and beautiful,” she remarked, acknowledging the complexity of their relationship. “I stepped away from my dad as a coach, but he never stopped being my dad. We have been good for several years.”
Recently, Pete Taylor spent time with her in Connecticut, assisting in her preparation for the fight against Serrano. Reflecting on her Olympic experience in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, where she lost to Finland’s Mira Potkonen, Taylor admitted that she missed having her father in her corner during that pivotal moment. “That loss almost crushed me, but it was the door to the greatest season of my life,” she stated. “I wouldn’t have gone pro if it wasn’t for that loss.”
Faith and Future Aspirations
Beyond her achievements in boxing, Taylor emphasized the significance of her faith. She described her relationship with God as foundational to her life and career. “It doesn’t just help me in my fights, it helps me make sense of life,” she explained. “I view the world through the lens that God is real.”
As Taylor navigates this new phase, she looks forward to the opportunities ahead, both in her personal life and potential return to boxing. Her recent experiences reflect a balance between her athletic accomplishments and the joys of a quieter, more personal existence. With her marriage and renewed family connections, Katie Taylor is poised for a future that embraces both love and the passion that has driven her for years.
