Russia Launches Extensive Drone and Missile Assault on Ukraine
Russia executed a significant military operation against Ukraine on March 9, 2024, deploying a total of 653 drones and 51 missiles overnight. This large-scale attack resulted in air raid alerts throughout Ukraine and left at least eight people injured, including three in the capital city of Kyiv.
Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted 585 drones and 30 missiles, mitigating the impact of the assault. Nonetheless, the attacks struck 29 locations across the country, causing considerable damage to various industrial facilities and residential buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on social media platform X that regions such as Dnipro, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Volyn, and Mykolaiv were affected by the strikes.
In his statement, Zelenskyy highlighted that energy facilities were primary targets, while noting the “meaningless” nature of the attack on a main railway station building in Fastiv. He emphasized that the Russian military could not have been unaware of the civilian implications of their actions.
Russian authorities responded by claiming to have shot down 116 Ukrainian drones over their territory during the same timeframe. The Russian Telegram news channel, Astra, reported an incident involving a drone attack on the Ryazan Oil Refinery, where debris from the attack damaged a residential building. However, regional governor Pavel Malkov did not confirm any damage to the refinery itself.
As Ukraine intensifies its efforts to disrupt Russia’s energy infrastructure, it aims to weaken the Kremlin’s capabilities to sustain its full-scale invasion. Ukrainian officials have maintained that targeting energy sources is essential for pressuring Russia to halt hostilities. Conversely, Russia has consistently aimed to undermine Ukraine’s energy grid, intending to deprive the populace of essential services during the harsh winter months.
Ongoing Peace Negotiations
The timing of this extensive military assault coincides with ongoing peace negotiations between Ukrainian and U.S. officials. These discussions, set to continue into their third day, focus on finding an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The United States has been actively engaged in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, seeking a potential peace deal.
Nevertheless, both Kyiv and its European allies have expressed skepticism regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s sincerity in pursuing a peaceful resolution. Previous discussions with the U.S. have yielded minimal progress, leading to concerns that Russia may be feigning interest in diplomatic talks.
As the situation unfolds, the international community remains watchful, aware that the outcomes of these negotiations could significantly influence the trajectory of the conflict in Ukraine.
