Ireland Launches Groundbreaking Trials for Chronic Pain Relief
A new initiative in Ireland is set to transform the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain through a series of pioneering clinical trials. A consortium comprising CrannMed, Salaso Health Solutions, the University of Galway, and the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences has secured €6.6 million in funding from the Government’s Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund. This funding was announced by Peter Burke, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, highlighting the project’s potential impact on patient care.
Innovative Treatment Approach
The collaborative effort, known as the RECAP project—standing for Resorbable Embolization for Chronic musculoskeletal Pain—aims to provide long-term relief for individuals suffering from chronic pain. The clinical trials will integrate two complementary technologies designed to enhance patient outcomes. Participants will benefit from a breakthrough pain treatment developed by CrannMed alongside a recovery program created by Salaso, which will involve guidance from clinical specialists.
During the initial trial, patients will receive an injection targeting blood flow to the painful area. This procedure aims to reduce inflammation and deactivate stray nerve endings, which contribute significantly to chronic pain. The structured recovery process that follows will focus on building strength and improving the resilience of musculoskeletal tissues.
The second trial introduces an AI-enabled self-management platform that supports patients in real-time as they navigate their recovery journey. This innovative approach is expected to foster a more sustainable and accessible model for pain management, positioning Ireland at the forefront of international healthcare advancements.
Potential Impact and Future Directions
CrannMed’s Chief Executive Officer, Liam Farrissey, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting the high-quality collaboration among Irish organizations. He stated, “The consortium covers development, manufacture, clinical validation, and AI-enabled patient engagement all from within world-class teams operating in the country.” If successful, this initiative could revolutionize chronic pain treatment and offer Irish patients access to these new therapies far earlier than traditional timelines would allow.
Salaso’s CEO, Aoife Ní Mhuirí, also underscored the significance of local treatment options, emphasizing the cost and time savings for both patients and the healthcare system. “The approach is more sustainable, more accessible for patients, and has the potential to set a new global standard for pain management,” she remarked.
Professor Fidelma Dunne, Director of the Institute for Clinical Trials at the University of Galway, highlighted the transformative potential of this project. She stated, “The innovative treatment and clinical trial will enable patients to get effective, long-term pain relief from chronic pain without surgery or addictive drugs.”
As the trials progress, researchers will develop new imaging techniques, smart trial designs, and pain measurement methodologies, all of which are crucial for integrating these solutions into standard healthcare practices.
The consortium anticipates that the combined benefits of the treatments and technologies being tested could offer outcomes significantly superior to current standard care methods, such as steroid injections, which are typically employed for chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions.
With the potential to change how chronic pain is managed, this initiative represents a vital step forward in addressing the needs of millions suffering from such conditions globally.
