Increased Security for Irish Jewish Community After Bondi Shooting
An armed attack at Bondi Beach in Australia has prompted Gardaí to enhance security measures at centers and events for the Irish Jewish community. The incident occurred on December 10, 2023, when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd during a Hanukkah celebration, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, according to New South Wales Police. The attack has been classified as a terrorist incident aimed specifically at the Jewish community.
In response to the tragedy, Gardaí issued a statement affirming the appointment of Liaison Inspectors. These officials will facilitate ongoing communication with the Jewish community to provide reassurance and support. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly is expected to discuss the situation with Yoni Wieder, Chief Rabbi of Ireland, to express condolences and outline security measures.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs stated it is currently “not aware” of any Irish citizens directly affected by the attack in Sydney. Minister Helen McEntee remarked on the incident, expressing her shock and horror at the antisemitic nature of the attack. She emphasized that the consulate in Sydney is closely monitoring developments and maintaining contact with Irish citizens in the area.
The attack occurred during the first day of the Jewish festival of lights, Hanukkah. Local police confirmed the targeting of the Jewish community in this violent act. Catherine Connolly, President of Ireland, expressed her deep sorrow over the events, stating, “I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the Jewish community everywhere at this time.” She extended condolences to the people of Australia, especially to those who lost loved ones or were injured.
Irish leaders have voiced their outrage over the attack. Taoiseach Micheál Martin shared his distress in a statement, saying, “Our prayers go to the families and friends of those lost, the injured, first responders, and the people of Australia at this distressing time.” He condemned the violence, asserting that “such hate and violence can never be tolerated.”
Similarly, Tánaiste Simon Harris described himself as “horrified” by the incident and conveyed his condolences to those impacted. He stressed the importance of rejecting hate and violence in society, stating, “The spectre of hate and violence must never be tolerated.”
As the investigation progresses, authorities in Australia continue to prioritize the safety of the community, and Gardaí remain vigilant in their support for the Irish Jewish population during this challenging time.
