Irish Reality Star Nathan Gallagher Rescues Victims at Bondi Beach

A tragic shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on July 23, 2023, left at least fifteen people dead, but Irish reality television star Nathan Gallagher emerged as a hero for his brave actions during the chaos. Gallagher, originally from Burtonport, Donegal, was engaged in a fishing trip off the coast when he heard what he initially thought were fireworks, only to realize they were gunshots.

Bravery Amidst Chaos

The incident occurred around 18:47 local time, when a father and son opened fire on attendees of a Jewish festival in the Archer Park area of the beach. Gallagher, who is known for his role on Below Deck Mediterranean, described the moment he understood the severity of the situation during an interview on RTÉ Radio 1’s Liveline. “We heard three or four shots and thought it was fireworks at first,” he said. “Then I realised it was gunshots and told the lads to stop what they were doing. We went full steam towards the shore to see if we could help.”

As panic engulfed the beach, Gallagher began calling to swimmers, urging them to swim towards the safety of his boat. “People didn’t know what was happening. Once I shouted that it was gunshots, people started swimming in all directions. I told them to come to the boat, and a few of them did,” he recounted.

Scenes of Desperation

The scenes described by Gallagher were harrowing. He witnessed individuals seeking cover, with surfers desperately attempting to escape the water. “It was something I’ll never forget. People were lying behind the lifeguard buggy, others running left and right,” he said. Despite feeling fear himself, Gallagher and his crew focused on rescuing those in danger.

In total, they managed to rescue six or seven people, even though their boat was filled with fishing gear. “There was barely any room. Some people were sitting on the gear, some near the controls, others squeezed into the small cabin — but we made it work,” he explained.

Many of those rescued were separated from loved ones, prompting Gallagher to lend his phone so they could contact their families. “I told them to make as many calls as they needed. Afterwards, their families even messaged me to say thank you. Reading those messages was incredibly emotional,” he added.

Despite the “absolute carnage,” Gallagher and his crew maintained their composure, reassuring those on board. The incident hit personally for Gallagher, as his partner, Gael Cameron, had intended to take their son to Bondi Beach that day. “Thankfully, they didn’t go,” he said, reflecting on the close call and the heightened anxiety many feel about returning to the beach and the city.
