Impose Toi Triumphs in Howden Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot
In a notable performance at Ascot on December 16, 2023, Impose Toi showcased his talent by winning the prestigious Howden Long Walk Hurdle. The seven-year-old horse, trained by Nicky Henderson, secured the victory against a competitive field, including the highly regarded Strong Leader. This win marks a significant milestone for both the horse and his owner, JP McManus.
Impressive Performance Against the Odds
Impose Toi entered the race after demonstrating considerable improvement since his earlier season debut in handicap racing at Aintree. Despite starting the race at a 6lb disadvantage compared to Strong Leader, who has been recognized as one of the UK’s top staying hurdlers, Impose Toi managed to turn the tide in his favor.
As the race unfolded, Strong Leader initially took the lead, demonstrating his capability on right-handed tracks. However, the McManus-owned pair of Impose Toi and Honesty Policy began to make their presence felt. Under the expert guidance of jockey Nico de Boinville, Impose Toi surged ahead, leaving Strong Leader trailing by a length and a quarter at the finish line. Honesty Policy, making his season debut, finished closely behind in third place, just a neck away.
Trainer and Jockey Praise Performance
Following the race, Henderson praised De Boinville’s tactical ride, stating, “He knew what he had to do and he’s given him the most perfect ride. We were quite a bit worse off with Strong Leader today, so we had to improve 6lb. He’s had a dream run round; he jumped, he travelled, and he was just always going best. From my point of view, it was quite pleasurable to watch!”
“That was a true test of stamina today so it’s fantastic, we’re over the moon, you couldn’t not be,” expressed De Boinville.
Henderson further noted that the horse’s performance indicates he is capable of competing at the highest levels of the sport. “If a horse finishes behind him at home, you’ve got to start worrying because he does absolutely nothing! He’s extraordinary in that sense, but now we know, and that’s fine,” he added. Looking ahead, Henderson mentioned the possibility of one more run before March, considering the upcoming Cleeve Hurdle.
De Boinville remarked on the overall experience, saying, “He looked and felt great; you could only be delighted with that. It went very smoothly. We’re delighted with how he’s progressed this season; he’s coming into his own now.” He emphasized the significance of the race: “That was level weights, so he’s entitled to be up there rated with the best three-mile hurdlers.”
With this victory, Impose Toi has solidified his status as a formidable competitor in the world of horse racing, leaving both his team and fans excited for what lies ahead.
