Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield recently shared his experiences of celebrating Christmas in space and his passion for writing during an interview on The Anton Savage Show. Hadfield, who has transitioned into an accomplished author and speaker, discussed his latest book, Final Orbit, while reflecting on his multifaceted career and life in orbit.

In the interview, Hadfield expressed enthusiasm for his current projects, stating, “I’m pleased with the things I’ve done so far, but I’m super excited about the stuff that I’m doing now.” His love for writing has been a constant throughout his life, with Hadfield revealing, “I always enjoyed writing. It was my favorite subject in school, English and language and writing.” He shared that he frequently immerses himself in literature, mentioning he is typically reading two books simultaneously—one nonfiction and the other a thriller.

Christmas in Space

Hadfield’s experience aboard the International Space Station during Christmas in 2012 was a unique blend of joy and logistical challenges. “It’s hard to order in all the gifts and the decorations and the tree,” he noted, explaining that weightlessness complicates traditional holiday preparations. Despite these hurdles, he described spending the day as “special,” highlighting the remarkable aspect of orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes.

On that day, Hadfield and his crew members celebrated by sharing their personal interpretations of Christmas, even singing songs from various cultures. He emphasized that the experience was far from lonely, remarking, “Lots of people spend Christmas working or away, and I was with good friends in a place that was really important to me.” Hadfield made time to connect with his family through video calls, ensuring a sense of togetherness despite the distance. “It was not a traditional, normal Christmas day, but it was a great one,” he added.

Embracing Family and Fiction

Reflecting on personal milestones, Hadfield spoke warmly about becoming a grandfather. He explained the joy of connecting with his grandchildren, stating, “Having a daughter is wonderful, but a daughter who then has a daughter, to me that’s heaven.” He cherishes the moments spent reading classic literature with them, mentioning, “In fact, in an hour and a half, she and I sit down just before she goes to bed, and we’re reading the Canadian classic series Anne of Green Gables together and I’m grateful for it.”

Hadfield also highlighted the significance of fiction, noting its capacity to broaden perspectives. “Fiction opens up everything to you; it allows you to expand the edges of your own awareness of what might be possible,” he said, underscoring his belief in the transformative power of storytelling.

As Hadfield continues to engage with audiences through his writing and speaking, his reflections on space and family life offer a unique perspective that resonates with many. Through his experiences, he exemplifies how connections—whether on Earth or in space—can enrich one’s life in profound ways.
