Chef Shay McGivern Serves Dublin’s Homeless for Nearly 30 Years
At Back Lane Hostel in Dublin’s Liberties, Chef Shay McGivern has dedicated nearly three decades to serving meals to the city’s homeless. On a quiet Wednesday lunchtime, he prepares fish goujons and chips, alongside chicken and broccoli pies, for those who rely on the hostel’s support. Despite a slower lunch service attributed to it being “pay day,” Shay remains optimistic about the influx of guests expected later for their evening meal.
Back Lane Hostel has a long history, having opened its doors in 1915 to provide affordable accommodation for working men. Over the years, as homelessness became increasingly visible in Dublin, the facility transitioned into a night shelter. For Shay, the kitchen represents more than just sustenance; it fosters a sense of community. He notes, “The lads that come through the door might talk to us about things a bit more than anyone else because we’re no threat to them.”
As Christmas approaches, the atmosphere becomes especially poignant. Shay recalls the festive meals served, which include a hearty breakfast and a traditional dinner featuring turkey, ham, and all the trimmings. “They have a great old time at Christmas,” he shares, detailing the special treats provided, such as King crisps and two cans of drinks per person on Christmas Day.
The emotional weight of the season is not lost on Shay, who understands that many of the men arriving at the hostel bear the scars of life on the streets. “A lot of them get into this little rut and because there’s so much garbage being thrown at them for so long, a lot of them just give up,” he explains. He emphasizes the transformative impact of the hostel, noting that within days, many guests begin to regain hope and a sense of belonging.
Shay’s commitment goes beyond his role in the kitchen. Outside of work, he finds it challenging to walk past someone in need without offering assistance. “My wife is always giving out to me,” he admits, recalling how he often stops to chat with those begging on the streets. He believes that simple conversations can make a significant difference, stating, “People need to learn they’re people, they’re humans.”
Cooking remains Shay’s passion, and he relishes the opportunity to connect with guests over meals. “I love the cooking, it’s all I’ve ever done,” he states. He often reassures individuals who feel lost, reminding them that homelessness can happen to anyone. “I just say, hang on a minute buddy, this is a little bump in the road,” he encourages.
As lunch service concludes, Shay prepares for the next part of his day, knowing that there may be more guests seeking assistance. “Even then, there is often a knock on the door,” he notes, illustrating the ongoing demand for support. After nearly 30 years in this role, Shay expresses his continued enjoyment and dedication to the work.
In light of the upcoming holiday season, organizations like Depaul are urging the public to contribute to their efforts, emphasizing the importance of support for the homeless community. Donations can be made at www.depaul.ie/homeforchristmas. Shay’s story exemplifies the vital role that compassion and community play in addressing homelessness, particularly during the festive season when many seek connection and support.
