January Delivers Exciting TV Premieres: From Thrillers to Fantasy
January 2024 ushers in a diverse lineup of television and streaming highlights, featuring a mix of thrillers, dramas, and beloved returning series. Key titles include the much-anticipated second season of The Night Manager and the return of the lavish romance in Bridgerton.
Notable Premieres This Month
Starting the year, The Night Manager returns on January 1 on BBC One, with a delayed release on Amazon Prime on January 11. After a decade-long hiatus, Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Jonathan Pine, who now adopts the alias Alex Goodwin. Pine, an MI6 officer, takes on the challenging task of infiltrating a Colombian arms operation. Alongside Hiddleston, Olivia Colman makes her return, joined by new cast members Diego Calva and Camilla Morrone. This season expands upon John le Carré’s original narrative, adapting to a more fragmented geopolitical landscape.
Another gripping series, Run Away, premieres on Netflix the same day. This eight-part thriller stars James Nesbitt as a father drawn into the criminal underworld while searching for his missing daughter, who struggles with drug addiction. The show, adapted from a novel by prolific crime author Harlan Coben, promises escalating tension and shocking revelations.
The home renovation series Room to Improve returns on January 4 on RTÉ One. Host Dermot Bannon navigates the challenges of rising material and labor costs while working with homeowners to manage their expectations and budgets. This season tackles the realities of building in Ireland as it stands in 2026.
Returning Favorites and New Adventures
The popular dance competition Dancing with the Stars also makes its comeback on January 4. Now in its ninth season, this glitzy spectacle features contestants such as Eurovision winner Niamh Kavanagh and reality star Paudie Moloney. They will compete for the coveted glitterball trophy, judged by Oti Mabuse, Brian Redmond, Arthur Gourounlian, and Karen Byrne.
On January 11, BBC One launches the fourth season of Industry, continuing its exploration of ambition and ethical dilemmas within the finance sector. Characters Harper, played by Myha’la, and Yasmin, portrayed by Marisa Abela, become involved with a high-profile fintech company, broadening the series’ perspective beyond trading floors.
Netflix’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials arrives on January 15. This stylish whodunit features a glamorous country house party that turns deadly. The story follows a young aristocrat, played by Mia McKenna Bruce, as she unravels secrets lurking beneath the surface, supported by an impressive cast including Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman.
For fans of fantasy, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts on Sky Atlantic and Now on January 18. Set long before the events of Game of Thrones, this spin-off follows hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his mysterious squire, Egg, a Targaryen. Expect sword fights, political intrigue, and compelling character arcs.
Marvel’s latest offering, Wonder Man, arrives on Disney+ on January 27. This meta superhero series centers on Simon Williams, an actor vying for the lead role in a film about Wonder Man. Unexpectedly gaining powers, the show promises a blend of Hollywood satire and comic-book excitement, potentially revitalizing the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Wrapping up the month, the third season of Shrinking premieres on Apple TV on January 28. Starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, this offbeat comedy-drama continues to address themes of grief and emotional honesty, delivering both humor and poignant moments.
