UPDATE: Electric vehicle sales in Limerick have skyrocketed by 44.66% in 2025, according to new data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). This significant surge comes as the region embraces greener alternatives, with 645 electric cars registered this year compared to only 445 in 2024.

This remarkable increase is part of a broader trend across Ireland, where total new car registrations reached 124,954, marking a 3% rise from last year. Nationally, electric vehicle registrations also soared, climbing to 23,601—a staggering 35.1% increase from 17,460 in 2024. The surge in electric car sales reflects a growing commitment to sustainability and climate action.

In Limerick, auto sales figures reveal that while overall new car registrations only rose by 1.66% from 4,042 in 2024, the leap in electric vehicle adoption showcases a shifting consumer preference. Electric cars now comprise 18.89% of the market share, while petrol and diesel vehicles are seeing a decline in their dominance.

Brian Cooke, SIMI director general, commented on the transformative shift:

“Hybrid-electric vehicles also continued to gain momentum in 2025, while traditional fuels (petrol and diesel) have seen a decline in their market share.”

He added that the current sales period, which began on January 1, 2025, has sparked optimism within the Irish motor industry, with numerous offers available for both new and used cars.

The increase in electric and hybrid vehicles indicates that Limerick is not just keeping pace but surpassing targets set out in the 2025 climate action plan. As shoppers look for eco-friendly options, the hatchback remains the top-selling car body type in Ireland, and grey continues to dominate as the preferred color for the tenth consecutive year.

This surge in electric vehicle sales is not only an environmental win but also a pivotal moment for Limerick’s economy. The local automotive industry is adapting to meet the rising demand, providing a variety of models and financing options to consumers eager to make a sustainable choice.

As the year progresses, all eyes will be on the evolving market trends, and industry insiders remain hopeful about continued growth in electric and hybrid vehicle adoption. With 2025 shaping up to be a landmark year for eco-friendly transportation, Limerick is leading the charge towards a greener future.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Limerick’s automotive landscape continues to transform.
