Students Unveil Affordable CPR Mannequin, Set to Revolutionize Training

URGENT UPDATE: Two innovative second-year students from Tullamore College have just unveiled a groundbreaking homemade CPR training mannequin, sparking interest in schools and households across Ireland. Diarmuid Eager and Frankie Sheehan showcased their invention at the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in Dublin today, arguing that their model is just as effective as commercial products at a fraction of the cost.

This remarkable mannequin, assembled for only €10 using common household materials, could change how CPR training is delivered nationwide. The device includes a plastic box, a dog clicker, tea towels, and an American football, all covered with a vinyl sheet. “We have a CPR machine in school that cost €50,” Eager stated, highlighting the affordability of their solution.

During their presentation, the duo reported successful training sessions with peers, comparing the homemade mannequin’s performance against a store-bought alternative. “The people we trained were then tested with a machine borrowed from the hospital that measures CPR effectiveness,” Eager explained. Their findings revealed that the DIY mannequin outperformed the commercial version in teaching CPR, offering a powerful tool for enhancing life-saving skills.

Eager and Sheehan expressed their desire for widespread adoption of their mannequin, emphasizing its potential to be a critical resource in every household. “We believe that there should be one of these mannequins, or something similar, in every household to teach people how to do CPR and make it more accessible for everyone,” Eager urged.

Their project is one of over 550 exhibits competing for awards at this year’s exhibition, which features a total of 225 schools. The Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, the largest of its kind in Europe, showcases impressive student innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In addition to Eager and Sheehan’s project, the exhibition spotlights a range of cutting-edge innovations, including numerous projects focused on artificial intelligence. Approximately 24% of the entries explore AI technology, such as an AI-powered recycling sorter and a tool predicting competition outcomes based on social behavior.

With the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition continuing until Saturday, the winners will be announced on Friday. This event not only highlights the creativity of young minds but also emphasizes the importance of affordable educational tools that can save lives.
