John Blek to Celebrate New Album Release with Kilkenny Performance
John Blek, one of Ireland’s most innovative independent musicians, is set to release his latest album, The Midnight Ache, on January 16, 2024. To mark this occasion, he will perform an intimate gig at Cleere’s Bar & Theatre in Kilkenny on February 6. The album’s third single, “Better,” has already been released, showcasing Blek’s talent for poignant lyricism and emotive vocal delivery.
The song “Better” follows the earlier singles “747” and “With You,” continuing to build anticipation for the forthcoming album. It reflects Blek’s personal struggles as he tries to convince a loved one of his capacity for growth despite his self-criticism. In his own words, he admits, “I’m my own worst critic in every facet of my life. Always hung up on trying to be better but often not doing much about it.”
Exploring The Midnight Ache
The Midnight Ache is poised to be a remarkable addition to Blek’s discography, described as an “alternative folk” album with a lo-fi heart and majestic elements. Comprising eleven tracks, this album showcases Blek’s DIY ethos, as he not only self-recorded and produced the majority of the music but also built his recording studio from the ground up. This creative space, named Bigger River Recording Co, was completed in April 2024 and has become the birthplace of much of his new work.
Blek draws inspiration from a variety of influences, with echoes of Sea Change-era Beck and Sparklehorse evident throughout the album. The string arrangements add a layer of sophistication, balancing the lo-fi intimacy that Blek is known for. At the heart of The Midnight Ache is a sense of home, with contributions from his wife and even the album cover adorned with pressed flowers from their garden.
Reflecting on the creative process, Blek stated, “This album took me by surprise. I was slowly writing and using the songs to try to get to know the new studio space.” He describes the experience as one of exploration, leading him to create a new record unexpectedly.
Anticipation Builds for Upcoming Tour
The release of The Midnight Ache not only highlights Blek’s artistic evolution but also sets the stage for an extensive tour across Ireland, the UK, and Europe. The Kilkenny performance will be one of many opportunities for fans to experience his music live.
With each single released, Blek continues to captivate audiences with his unique sound and heartfelt storytelling. As the release date approaches, anticipation is mounting for what promises to be a stunning collection of songs that resonate deeply with listeners.
The Midnight Ache will be available on January 16, 2024, through Bigger River Recording Co, further establishing John Blek as a significant voice in contemporary music.
