Five Players Andy Farrell Should Consider for Six Nations Squad
Andy Farrell, the head coach of the Irish national rugby team, is preparing to announce the squad for the Six Nations tournament next week. As he faces significant decisions regarding player selections, injuries are complicating matters. Specifically, the loosehead prop options are dwindling due to injuries, while several backs are either unavailable or out of form. Farrell must take a pragmatic approach, prioritizing current performance over past contributions. Here are five players who could make a substantial impact in the upcoming tournament.
Harry Byrne: A Formidable Fly-Half Option
One of the most compelling choices for Farrell is Harry Byrne. Currently regarded as the top fly-half in Ireland, Byrne’s recent performance—a last-minute penalty that secured a victory against La Rochelle—has heightened expectations for his return to the national team.
Byrne, who earned his first cap against the USA in 2021, has only played three times for Ireland. His last appearance was during the 2024 Six Nations when he substituted against Scotland. Given his recent success, it is time for Farrell to reward him with a spot on the squad.
Zac Ward: An Emerging Talent
Another strong candidate is Zac Ward, a graduate of the now-defunct Irish sevens programme. With injuries affecting the wing position, Ward stands out as a prime opportunity for selection.
Playing for Ulster, Ward has thrived under the coaching of Mark Sexton and has scored five tries this season. Ulster’s impressive attacking form suggests that Ward’s inclusion could strengthen the backline. However, his kicking abilities may be a concern for Farrell, who values versatile players with strong kicking skills.
Joshua Kenny: A Rising Star
With injuries sidelining key players such as Mack Hansen, Calvin Nash, and James Lowe, Joshua Kenny emerges as a necessary replacement. Another success story from the sevens programme, Kenny has revitalized the Leinster team this season.
He has demonstrated his prowess with eight tries in five starts, including a remarkable double during his Champions Cup debut against La Rochelle. Kenny’s speed, strength, and aerial ability make him an ideal modern winger, one that Farrell is likely eager to incorporate into his plans.
Tom Stewart: Versatility in the Hooker Position
While Tom Stewart has limited international experience, having been capped only four times, he has shown considerable improvement this season with Ulster. Stewart has captained his team on multiple occasions and led the Ireland ‘A’ side against Spain last November.
Notably, Stewart has showcased versatility by playing as an openside flanker in South Africa against the Lions. This adaptability could appeal to Farrell, who may consider employing him in a hybrid role similar to that of South Africa’s Deon Fourie.
Edwin Edogbo: Strengthening the Second Row
With Ryan Baird expected to miss the start of the Six Nations, Farrell faces the challenge of restructuring the back row. This situation presents an opportunity for Edwin Edogbo to make his mark on the Test scene.
Edogbo’s physical presence is vital, especially after Ireland’s struggles against the Springboks in November. With the possibility of Tadhg Beirne shifting to the blindside, Farrell could opt for a powerful second-row pairing of Joe McCarthy and Edogbo to meet the physical demands posed by teams like England and France.
As the announcement of the Six Nations squad approaches, it is clear that Andy Farrell has pivotal choices to make. The players highlighted above not only bring talent but also the potential to address current gaps in the team. With the right selections, Ireland could significantly bolster their chances in the upcoming tournament.
