Irish Consumers Prioritize Overseas Holidays Despite Rising Costs
Recent research indicates that Irish consumers continue to prioritize overseas holidays, despite the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. A survey conducted by Multitrip.com reveals that a significant majority of individuals remain committed to enjoying multiple vacations in 2026, with 53% of respondents planning to take three or more holidays next year.
The study, which gathered insights from over 2,500 participants, shows a strong determination among travelers to adapt their plans while maintaining their travel aspirations. Jason Whelan, Managing Director of Multitrip.com, noted the increasing recognition of the value of holidays. He stated, “We hear a lot about the importance of holidays these days and it’s clear from our research that people truly realise the value of taking the hard-earned break, maybe a couple of times a year.”
Despite the financial pressures, the survey’s findings highlight various ways consumers are adjusting their travel plans. While 65% of respondents acknowledged that the cost-of-living crisis has impacted their travel intentions for 2026, 38% plan to maintain similar spending levels as in 2025. Furthermore, 22% are prepared to increase their travel budgets, demonstrating a willingness to prioritize leisure despite economic challenges. Interestingly, 35% reported that their travel plans remain unaffected by the economic situation.
Consumer Adaptations and Travel Preferences
For those making adjustments, the survey suggests a range of flexible solutions. 44% of participants intend to take slightly fewer holidays, while 17% will opt for shorter vacations. Only 7% plan to select destinations closer to home, and a mere 2% intend to forgo holidays altogether this year.
When it comes to preferred destinations for 2026, Mainland Spain and the Canaries stand out as the top choices, attracting 16% and 14% of respondents, respectively. The month of travel shows a clear trend, with September being the most favored time to vacation at 33%, followed by May at 27% and June at 26%.
In addition to travel preferences, Multitrip.com offers a variety of insurance options tailored to travelers’ needs. Whelan highlighted popular products such as the Individual Annual policy and Family & Couple Annual policies, which provide coverage for different travel arrangements throughout the year. The Annual Family Premier Plus policy allows children to be insured at no additional cost, enhancing accessibility for families planning vacations together.
As Irish consumers navigate the current economic landscape, their commitment to travel remains evident. This research underscores the enduring importance of vacations as a priority expenditure, reflecting a broader desire for leisure and recreation, even in challenging financial times.
