Robert Jenrick Defects to Reform UK, Criticizes Conservative Party

Robert Jenrick has officially joined Reform UK, publicly denouncing the Conservative Party as a “failed” entity that lacks the resolve to implement necessary changes in the country. His defection comes after being dismissed from the shadow cabinet by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who cited substantial evidence indicating Jenrick was planning to leave the party.

During a press conference held on March 7, 2024, alongside Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, Jenrick expressed his disillusionment with the Conservatives, stating, “The party hasn’t changed and it won’t.” He emphasized that the majority of the party lacks the vision to undertake the “radical change this country needs.”

Jenrick acknowledged his past mistakes while serving as a minister, attributing part of the Conservative Party’s failings to former Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. He remarked, “I can’t in good conscience stick with a party that’s failed so badly, that isn’t sorry and hasn’t changed.” His comments reflect growing discontent among some members regarding the party’s current direction.

Farage heralded Jenrick’s arrival as a significant moment for the reconfiguration of the centre-right political landscape in the UK. He stated, “I think Rob coming will bring a lot more people and voters to us.” Farage noted that Reform UK is actively recruiting individuals who feel marginalized by the traditional two-party system and are seeking a political platform that reflects their values.

Jenrick, who represents Newark, confirmed he would not resign his seat to trigger a by-election. He described both Labour and the Conservatives as “rotten” and incapable of addressing the pressing issues facing the nation. While acknowledging that he does not agree with everything Farage has said in the past, Jenrick stated, “In retrospect, I see that in this period when the two main parties were failing Britain, Nigel was all too often a lone voice of common sense.”

The press conference had a somewhat awkward atmosphere, particularly when Farage joked about the delay in Jenrick’s appearance, saying, “Kemi hasn’t called him and asked him back.”
