Robert Jenrick has officially joined Reform UK, publicly denouncing the Conservative Party as a “failed” entity that lacks the resolve to implement necessary changes in the country. His defection comes after being dismissed from the shadow cabinet by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who cited substantial evidence indicating Jenrick was planning to leave the party.

During a press conference held on March 7, 2024, alongside Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, Jenrick expressed his disillusionment with the Conservatives, stating, “The party hasn’t changed and it won’t.” He emphasized that the majority of the party lacks the vision to undertake the “radical change this country needs.”

Jenrick acknowledged his past mistakes while serving as a minister, attributing part of the Conservative Party’s failings to former Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. He remarked, “I can’t in good conscience stick with a party that’s failed so badly, that isn’t sorry and hasn’t changed.” His comments reflect growing discontent among some members regarding the party’s current direction.

Reform UK Welcomes New Member

Farage heralded Jenrick’s arrival as a significant moment for the reconfiguration of the centre-right political landscape in the UK. He stated, “I think Rob coming will bring a lot more people and voters to us.” Farage noted that Reform UK is actively recruiting individuals who feel marginalized by the traditional two-party system and are seeking a political platform that reflects their values.

Jenrick, who represents Newark, confirmed he would not resign his seat to trigger a by-election. He described both Labour and the Conservatives as “rotten” and incapable of addressing the pressing issues facing the nation. His critique of the two main parties extended to their handling of immigration, asserting that Labour initiated mass migration while the Conservatives exacerbated it after 2019.

While acknowledging that he does not agree with everything Farage has said in the past, Jenrick stated, “In retrospect, I see that in this period when the two main parties were failing Britain, Nigel was all too often a lone voice of common sense.”

The press conference had a somewhat awkward atmosphere, particularly when Farage joked about the delay in Jenrick’s appearance, saying, “Kemi hasn’t called him and asked him back.”

Political Repercussions and Reactions

Following Jenrick’s defection, Badenoch reaffirmed her decision to remove him from the shadow cabinet, citing clear evidence of his intentions to defect. A Conservative source indicated that Jenrick had been delayed in delivering his speech at the Reform press conference due to his need to adjust his remarks after the party released excerpts of a speech purportedly revealing his planned departure.

In the aftermath, Labour leader Keir Starmer questioned Badenoch’s timing in dismissing Jenrick, accusing him of making “toxic comments to try and divide our country.” The Liberal Democrats also criticized Jenrick, suggesting he lacked the credibility to comment on the state of the nation, given his prior affiliations with the Conservative Party.

While Reform UK continues to build momentum, its leadership has indicated a potential deadline for new members from the Conservative Party. Zia Yusuf, Reform’s head of policy, stated that May 7 would serve as a cut-off point for any further defections. Farage noted that the Conservative Party’s relevance could be in jeopardy after this date, urging potential defectors to act before local elections take place.

As the political landscape shifts, Jenrick’s departure signals a growing fracture within the Conservative Party, with calls for a more robust response to the issues facing the UK. His move to Reform UK could attract others dissatisfied with the current political climate, reshaping the dynamics of British politics in the months to come.
