Vintage Footage Revives Cork City’s Resilience Post-War
A newly digitized vintage newsreel titled “New Cork” is now available for streaming on the Irish Film Institute’s IFI Archive Player. This 1927 footage showcases the revitalization of Cork City following the significant destruction it endured during the War of Independence. As the camera glides down Patrick Street, viewers can observe several newly constructed landmarks, including Cash’s, Egan’s, Roches Stores, and the Munster Arcade.
The reconstruction efforts that occurred in the years following the war not only restored the city’s architectural beauty but also generated new employment opportunities. Remarkably, most banks and churches in Cork remained unharmed during the turmoil, standing as enduring symbols of the city’s historical and cultural heritage.
Preserving Historical Footage
The slightly unstable images captured in this newsreel were likely filmed by mounting a camera on a tram traveling through the city. “New Cork” is part of the Irish Independence Film Collection, a project developed by the Irish Film Institute that aims to repatriate and preserve historical film footage documenting significant events in Irish history.
The decades from 1900 to 1930 were particularly tumultuous in Ireland, marked by events such as World War I, the Easter Rising, the War of Independence, and the Irish Civil War. Thanks to the advent of cine camera technology in the 1890s, these events became the first to be extensively documented on film. However, early filmmaking in Ireland was scarce, leading to the majority of this historical footage being captured by non-Irish agencies.
Until recently, many of these Irish newsreels had not been preserved in an Irish archive and were unavailable to the public for nearly a century. The Decade of Commemorations provided the Irish Film Institute with a unique opportunity to curate the Irish Independence Film Collection. With support from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the IFI successfully centralized these artifacts in Ireland and made them accessible to the public.
High-Quality Digitization and Collaboration
Recognizing the fragility and historical significance of the newsreels, the Irish Film Institute collaborated closely with the British Film Institute and British Pathé to ensure the highest quality preservation of this vital material. The IFI persuaded these organizations to return to the original nitrate film prints and meticulously digitize them to high-definition quality. As a result, viewers can now experience the footage with remarkable clarity, revealing details that were previously obscured.
To enhance the collection further, the IFI enlisted the expertise of the National Museum of Ireland and University College Cork. Their contributions helped curate and catalogue the content accurately, ensuring that significant events, figures, and locations were properly represented—many of which had been overlooked by earlier cataloguers.
As part of the national centenary celebrations, the Irish Film Institute’s efforts have not only commemorated a pivotal moment in Irish history but have also provided lasting value to the Irish public. The availability of “New Cork” through the IFI Archive Player allows audiences globally to engage with Ireland’s rich heritage. This virtual viewing room offers a diverse array of content, including documentaries, animations, advertisements, and amateur footage, all preserved within the IFI Irish Film Archive.
For those interested in exploring more of Ireland’s historical footage, the IFI Archive Player can be accessed on various platforms, including iPhone, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. Visitors are encouraged to engage with this remarkable collection, which brings to life the rich tapestry of Irish culture from the last century.
