Belfast City Airport Earns Platinum Environmental Recognition Again
Belfast City Airport has once again achieved the prestigious Platinum Level in the Business in the Community Northern Ireland’s Environmental Benchmarking Survey. This marks the sixth consecutive year the airport has received this accolade, underscoring its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible business practices.
The annual survey evaluates organizations based on a variety of environmental metrics, including carbon management, biodiversity, waste reduction, and overall sustainability performance. Located just five minutes from Belfast city centre, the airport has established a reputation for prioritizing environmental initiatives in its operations.
Ian Nuttall, Environment and Sustainability Manager at Belfast City Airport, emphasized the airport’s strategic focus on environmental issues. “Our strategy for growth places the environment at its core, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, minimising resource use, increasing our use of renewable energy, and managing local impacts,” he stated. Nuttall noted that being recognized as a top performer in the Environmental Benchmarking Survey reflects the dedication of the entire team and its partners who contribute to sustainable practices.
Belfast City Airport’s commitment to environmental stewardship has led to a significant reduction in direct carbon emissions, achieving a decrease of 13% since 2022. This achievement highlights the airport’s proactive approach to sustainability and carbon management.
The Environmental Benchmarking Survey serves not only as a recognition tool but also as a means for organizations to assess their environmental performance. Dr. Lisa McIlvenna, Managing Director of Business in the Community, explained the survey’s purpose. “The Survey is a self-disclosure exercise that offers organizations a way to be externally assessed and scored on their environmental efforts and performance,” she said. Participating organizations receive a Gap Analysis Report, which helps identify areas for improvement while also showcasing their strengths.
Belfast City Airport’s ongoing efforts demonstrate that a commitment to sustainability can coexist with operational success. As the airport continues to lead by example, it sets a standard for others in the industry to follow. With the backing of strong environmental strategies and community engagement, Belfast City Airport aims to enhance its performance further in the years to come.
