Kilkenny County Council has announced plans to convert the former Dick Dooley’s Butcher’s Shop at 62 Barrack Street in Castlecomer into five new residential units. This initiative aims to address local housing needs by providing one two-bedroom home and four one-bedroom apartments.

The development will occur in two phases over the coming months. The first phase is set to commence later this year. Completion of the second phase will depend on the timely installation of new water connections by Uisce Éireann in the North Kilkenny town.

Challenges with Water Quality

Castlecomer has faced persistent challenges regarding water quality in recent years, impacting both housing developments and local businesses. The council’s efforts to refurbish the butcher shop site are part of a broader strategy to revitalize the area and improve living conditions for residents.

Residents and stakeholders are invited to provide feedback on the proposal. Submissions should be clearly marked as ’62 Barrack Street, Castlecomer Part 8 Planning Submission’ and directed to the Planning Section of Kilkenny County Council at County Hall, John Street, Kilkenny. The deadline for submissions is 5 PM on January 26.

As the project moves forward, it represents a significant step toward enhancing housing availability in Castlecomer and may help mitigate some of the area’s ongoing water quality issues. Further updates on the development will be provided as they become available.
