Celtic’s Martin O’Neill Lauds Team Spirit After Draw with Bologna
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill expressed his admiration for his team’s resilience following a dramatic 2-2 draw with Bologna in the Europa League on March 7, 2024. The match saw Celtic reduced to ten players after midfielder Reo Hatate received a red card in the first half. Despite the setback, O’Neill praised his side’s “colossal spirit” as they fought to secure a vital point.
Celtic started strongly, with Hatate scoring just six minutes into the match after capitalizing on a goalkeeper error. However, his momentum was halted when he was shown two yellow cards in quick succession. The first was for a foul on Lewis Ferguson, followed by a second for an unnecessary kick while contesting for the ball. This dismissal significantly shifted the dynamics of the game.
Even with a man down, Celtic showcased their determination. Defender Auston Trusty extended their lead to 2-0 in the 40th minute, converting from a corner after making crucial defensive contributions earlier in the match. Bologna responded with a strong offensive effort in the second half, ultimately leveling the score during a tense period. Celtic had opportunities to reclaim the lead but settled for a draw, leaving them well-placed ahead of their final group stage match.
O’Neill acknowledged the impact of Hatate’s sending-off on the game, stating, “Well, obviously the sending-off had a major effect on the game. I thought that we played brilliantly, got the goal and looked at a really decent outfit.” He added, “If we had stayed with 11 men, I think we would have won the game.”
The draw puts Celtic in a favorable position as they prepare to host Utrecht at Celtic Park next Thursday. A win would secure them 11 points in the group, a total that proved sufficient for advancement to the knockout stage last season.
O’Neill highlighted Trusty’s outstanding performance, saying, “Trusty was magnificent. He epitomised the spirit of the team. It was colossal, really colossal.” He noted that Trusty and teammate Liam Scales have been integral to the team’s defensive strategy during his tenure.
Following the match, Hatate expressed his regret over the red card. O’Neill mentioned that Hatate was visibly apologetic at halftime and after the final whistle, acknowledging the emotional toll of the incident.
As Celtic looks ahead to their decisive clash with Utrecht, O’Neill remains optimistic about his team’s chances of qualification. Their spirited performance against Bologna, despite adversity, reflects the determination needed to succeed in the competitive landscape of European football.
