Using free modeling software such as MakeHuman, Blender, and Cloud Compare, Moraes demonstrated how fabric would behave when draped over a human form versus a shallow-relief sculpture. The study indicates that the Shroud of Turin, measuring approximately 14.5 feet by 3.7 feet, displays a faint outline of a male figure with injuries consistent with crucifixion.

For centuries, this cloth has been revered as a sacred artifact, believed to date back over 2,000 years. Despite ongoing debates about its authenticity, the narrative surrounding the shroud has persisted since it first appeared in the 14th century. A pivotal moment occurred in 1989, when radiocarbon dating determined its origin to be between 1260 and 1390 CE. Although subsequent studies suggested that the sample may have come from a repaired section of the fabric, the original dating remains widely accepted.

Moraes’s digital analysis revealed that the image produced when fabric was placed over a 3D human figure did not align with the shroud’s actual appearance. The distortion observed, known as the “Agamemnon Mask effect”—named after a famous burial mask from Mycenae—indicated that the fabric would appear broader and deformed if it had been wrapped around a real body. In contrast, the impression from a shallow-relief carving closely matched the shape and dimensions of the image found on the shroud.

Moraes remarked, “The contact pattern generated by the low-relief model is more compatible with the Shroud’s image. It shows less anatomical distortion and greater fidelity to the observed contours.” He posited that a shallow carving, potentially made from wood, stone, or metal, could have been used as a template. By applying heat or pigment solely to the raised areas, the artisan could have produced the likeness of Jesus.

Furthermore, Moraes acknowledged a slight possibility that the cloth might have originated from an authentic corpse covering. His findings lend support to the earlier carbon dating results from 1989. While he did not examine the physical material or the specific techniques used in its creation, he concluded that the Shroud of Turin should be regarded as a “masterwork of Christian art,” reflective of the style prevalent during the medieval period.
