Former Kilkenny Captain Urges Fans to Embrace Positivity Ahead of New Season
Former Kilkenny senior hurling captain Andy Comerford has called for supporters to adopt a positive mindset as the team prepares for the 2026 senior inter-county season. The Cats are set to face Offaly at UPMC Nowlan Park on Sunday, marking the start of the Allianz Hurling League.
The upcoming match represents a significant moment for Kilkenny, as they mix seasoned players with emerging talent. However, the team will be without key players Huw Lawlor and Billy Ryan for the duration of the campaign. This absence has raised concerns among fans about the potential for the team to end its long wait for the Liam MacCarthy Cup, which has not been held by Kilkenny since the 111th season.
Comerford emphasized the importance of a positive attitude, stating, “Negativity is not going to win any All-Irelands; it has to be positive.” He believes the current team is on the brink of success but needs a boost from its supporters.
Encouraging Young Talent
The former captain highlighted the opportunity for young players to step up and make their mark. “This team is only a small bit away, but I think we need to reinvigorate it with some young blood coming in,” Comerford remarked. He encouraged young athletes to seize their chance, stating, “Play well in this setup and the first few matches, nail down your place in the team, and you have a great chance regardless of age.”
With the mix of youth and experience, Kilkenny supporters are hopeful that the team can build momentum as the season unfolds. The call for positivity and support from fans is seen as crucial for creating an encouraging atmosphere for the players.
In a time of uncertainty, Comerford’s message resonates strongly with the Kilkenny community. As they prepare for their opening match, the focus will be on fostering an environment where both seasoned players and newcomers can thrive.
The anticipation surrounding the season opener is palpable, and fans are eager to see how the team responds to Comerford’s rallying cry. As the action unfolds at UPMC Nowlan Park, the hope is that Kilkenny can channel the energy of its supporters into a successful campaign.
