Clinical Measurement Physiologists Plan Industrial Action Next Week
Industrial action involving clinical measurement physiologists (CMPs) in voluntary hospitals is set to commence on January 30, 2026, unless a resolution is reached during upcoming talks. The union representing these professionals, Fórsa, has indicated that they will begin a work-to-rule if negotiations at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) do not yield an agreement.
The planned action will involve CMPs strictly adhering to their contracted hours and duties, which could impact the provision of diagnostic information crucial for clinical decisions and individual treatment plans. While emergency services will continue, Fórsa has emphasized that the action could delay essential services, ultimately affecting patient care.
Concerns Over Staffing and Outsourcing
Fórsa represents over 350 CMPs across Ireland, and the union asserts that the ongoing dispute could be resolved through constructive dialogue. Key issues include the completion and implementation of a joint workforce review and a call to halt the expensive outsourcing of CMP services within the public health system.
The union has also highlighted the need for a staffing agreement for chronic disease hubs, which are critical facilities where CMPs are based. Without addressing these concerns, the potential for a significant impact on healthcare delivery remains high.
Next Steps and Potential Outcomes
Negotiations are scheduled for January 28, 2026, at the WRC. Fórsa has urged the Health Service Executive (HSE) to engage meaningfully in discussions to avoid disruption to services. The union believes that a commitment from the HSE to recognize and address their concerns could facilitate a swift resolution.
As discussions approach, the healthcare community and patients alike are keenly aware of the implications of this potential industrial action. The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare professionals in securing fair working conditions while maintaining patient safety and care standards.
