Doctor Warns Against Self-Medication for Dizziness Symptoms
A medical professional has issued a strong caution against self-medication for individuals experiencing dizziness, a common health symptom. Dr. Raj Arora, a general practitioner and health educator, emphasizes the importance of consulting a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of such symptoms.
Dr. Arora highlights the temptation to rely on over-the-counter medications when feeling unwell. However, she points out that dizziness can arise from a variety of serious conditions, including a stroke, heart attack, or neurological issues. “Make sure you’re seeing your GP, because lots of different things can cause dizzy spells,” she explained. Identifying the root cause is essential before attempting any self-treatment.
According to Dr. Arora, less serious factors can also contribute to dizziness, such as vertigo or temporary effects from a common cold. “Diagnosing yourself with dizzy spells and then trying to manage it is something I would not recommend,” she stated. Instead, she urges individuals to seek medical advice for a proper assessment and treatment plan.
The physician elaborated on various causes of dizziness, which can include issues related to blood pressure, inner ear problems, anemia, hormonal changes, and even heart conditions. She warns that masking symptoms without understanding their origin can lead to delays in receiving necessary help. “If it keeps happening, get it properly checked,” Dr. Arora advised.
Understanding Dizziness and When to Seek Help
While occasional dizziness is common and may not indicate a serious health issue, it is crucial to recognize when to consult a healthcare professional. Symptoms of dizziness can manifest in different ways, including feelings of lightheadedness, imbalance, or a sense of spinning.
Dr. Arora suggests that if dizziness occurs alongside other health issues, it may resolve once those conditions are treated. For instance, dizziness experienced upon standing or sitting up suddenly could indicate a sudden drop in blood pressure, known as postural hypotension. Other symptoms, such as hearing loss or ringing in the ears, might suggest problems with the inner ear.
Furthermore, if dizziness follows the initiation of a new prescription medication, it could be a side effect of that drug. Dr. Arora emphasizes the importance of not self-diagnosing and encourages individuals to see a GP for accurate medical evaluation.
In her communication, Dr. Arora stressed the need for individuals to maintain their health by seeking answers rather than making assumptions. Although dizziness is often not serious, persistent or recurrent episodes warrant professional attention. The message is clear: prioritizing health by consulting with a medical expert is essential for addressing dizziness effectively.
