University of Galway and Medtronic Launch Medical Device Hub

The University of Galway has officially opened its new Medical Device Prototype Hub, a significant development supported by the global medical device company Medtronic. Announced on February 6, 2026, this initiative is part of a five-year partnership worth €5 million established in 2023, focusing on enhancing the MedTech ecosystem, engaging in STEM outreach, and advancing research in medical technology.

Professor David Burn, president of the University of Galway, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “University of Galway is creating the ecosystem in which our partners in research and innovation can thrive. We look forward to celebrating the breakthroughs and successes that this initiative enables.” The hub is designed to foster innovation and collaboration, further positioning Galway as a key player in Ireland’s MedTech landscape.

Enhancing Medical Device Innovation

The Medical Device Prototype Hub is part of the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, inaugurated in 2024 under the same partnership framework. It will leverage collaborations with government agencies and industry leaders to create a supportive environment for innovation and regional growth in life sciences and medical technologies.

The hub operates under the University of Galway’s new Technology Services Directorate, which provides shared research infrastructure and technical expertise. This structure aims to enhance activities across both the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation and the Institute for Clinical Trials, established in 2024 and 2023, respectively.

Ronan Rogers, senior R&D director at Medtronic, noted the significance of this partnership, stating, “Medtronic has deep roots in the west of Ireland, and this facility strengthens a shared commitment to advancing research, accelerating innovation, and developing the next generation of medical technologies.” He added that the hub will “unlock new avenues for discovery and accelerate the path from promising ideas to real-world medical solutions for patients.”

Comprehensive Support for Prototyping

Equipped with expert staff, the Medical Device Prototype Hub offers a full suite of services that facilitate the creation, development, and manufacturing of innovative medical device prototypes. This includes both virtual and physical prototyping, enabling rapid design iteration through computer-aided design, modeling, and simulation.

The hub provides a complete, one-stop solution for 3D printing needs, featuring state-of-the-art additive manufacturing technologies. This facility is geared towards validating prototypes and includes expert-led design, printing, and consultancy services, ensuring that early-stage medical device innovation receives the necessary support to thrive.
