Austria Charges 21-Year-Old with Planning Taylor Swift Concert Attack
Austrian prosecutors have filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old suspect in connection with a planned attack during a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna. The individual, identified by Austrian media as Beran A, was arrested shortly before the concert, which was part of a series of performances scheduled for August 2024. Authorities accused him of plotting an Islamist militant attack aimed at the event.
The prosecutors’ office announced on Monday that they intend to bring a criminal case against the suspect in Wiener Neustadt, a town located near Vienna. They allege that Beran A produced a small quantity of the explosive substance known as triacetone triperoxide and attempted to illegally purchase weapons. This announcement followed the cancellation of three planned Taylor Swift concerts in August, which authorities stated were halted due to the foiling of the attack.
According to the official statement from the prosecutors’ office, Beran A is linked to the Islamic State. He is accused of conducting online research regarding a specific type of shrapnel bomb utilized by the group and disseminating Islamic State propaganda online. If found guilty, Beran A faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.
His lawyer has not commented on the new charges but has previously challenged the accusations against his client. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding security at large public events, particularly in light of the rising threat posed by extremist groups.
The Vienna prosecutors’ office is expected to proceed with the case in the coming weeks, which will shed further light on the details of the suspect’s plans and the extent of his connections to terrorist activities.
