Eurovision Live Tour Canceled, Fans Express Outrage Online
The cancellation of the inaugural live tour celebrating the 70th anniversary of Eurovision has sparked significant outrage among fans. Originally slated for summer 2026, the tour was intended to feature performances in ten major European cities, including London, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris, and Stockholm. The indefinite postponement comes as a setback for organizers who are preparing for this year’s song contest.
Online reactions have varied, but a common theme among fans has been frustration over the high ticket prices, which were set at £200 each. Many took to social media to voice their discontent. One user on X commented, “Wonder if the ‘unforeseen challenges’ were the awful lineup and the £200 ticket prices.” This sentiment was echoed by numerous others who filled the reply sections of the official announcement with similar criticisms about both the pricing and the apparent lack of demand for tickets.
Eurovision journalist GJ Kooijman highlighted the issue further by sharing maps showing thousands of available seats at several venues on the day of the cancellation. The stark image underscored the challenges organizers faced.
The tour’s cancellation is particularly notable given the ongoing boycott by several countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Iceland, and Ireland, over ethical concerns related to Israel’s participation in the contest amid the Gaza conflict. The Netherlands was set to host a stop on the tour despite its stance on the main contest.
Organizers Respond to Backlash
In a statement released on October 20, 2023, Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, addressed the concerns of fans. “We have encountered unforeseen challenges that despite the best efforts of our team, the producers, and promoters we have been unable to resolve. To the thousands of fans who bought tickets, thank you,” he said.
Green assured fans that the live tour would be relaunching at a later date, emphasizing that the current focus is on the rapidly approaching main contest. “We look forward to relaunching the live tour when we can ensure the world-class experience that our fans expect. Our focus remains on delivering an incredible Eurovision Song Contest in May,” he added.
The main event is set to take place on May 16, 2024, in Vienna, Austria. The UK will be represented by Sam Battle, known online as LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER, an experimental electronic musician whose viral performances have garnered significant attention.
Other countries, including Greece, Denmark, and Luxembourg, have also announced their participants for the contest, while additional nations are still finalizing their selections. The cancellation of the live tour adds another layer of complexity to an event that is already facing various challenges.
As fans await further developments, the focus on the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest remains high. The reaction to the tour’s cancellation illustrates the strong passion and commitment of Eurovision fans around the world.
