Commissioned by Guinness and conducted by Bounce Insights, the study highlights the significant role of local pubs as community hubs, driven by groups of enthusiastic fans dubbed ‘Pint Playmakers.’

The research indicates that rugby is deeply ingrained in Irish culture, with nearly two in three Irish adults identifying as rugby fans. Remarkably, 70% of respondents stated that the Guinness Six Nations inspires them to organise social gatherings, particularly in pubs, reinforcing the tournament’s importance in the social calendar.

This communal spirit is especially pronounced ahead of the Ireland versus England match, with an impressive 93% of fans indicating they plan to host social events around this significant game. The rivalry between the two nations resonates strongly, with 90% of participants affirming its importance, irrespective of the teams’ current standings.

Regional Insights into Rugby Fandom

The survey also reveals interesting regional variations in rugby enthusiasm. In Ulster, commitment to social gatherings for the upcoming match is unanimous, with 100% of fans planning events. In Munster, 94% of fans are similarly motivated to celebrate the Ireland versus Scotland match, showcasing a remarkable passion for the sport.

Conversely, Connacht presents a unique cultural perspective, where Valentine’s Day often takes precedence over the Guinness Six Nations as a social event, illustrating a charming prioritisation of romance in the West. This regional diversity highlights the multifaceted social dynamics present in Ireland.

The way different generations engage with the tournament further underscores the evolving nature of match-day experiences. While pubs remain a central gathering place, younger fans, particularly those aged 18-24, are drawn to the atmosphere, with 40% preferring to watch matches in bars. In contrast, over 55% of those aged 55 and older choose to enjoy matches at home, highlighting a preference for intimate gatherings. Residents of Dublin also exhibit distinct habits, often opting to watch matches at friends’ houses.

The Role of ‘Pint Playmakers’ in Match-Day Planning

The research categorises four types of ‘Pint Playmakers’ who facilitate the social enjoyment of rugby. The first group includes the group chat instigator, predominantly female, who ensures everyone is engaged and excited. Males are more likely to take the lead in organising plans, often stepping up to order the first round of drinks.

The 25-34 age group is identified as the booking boss, frequently handling reservations to secure prime viewing spots, while respondents aged 55 and up are noted for their ability to recommend ideal pubs and venues.

These collaborative efforts are crucial for creating a vibrant atmosphere during the tournament. The findings suggest that nearly 70% of Irish adults are more inclined to plan pub gatherings during this period, with 58% reporting that pubs serve as a vital social anchor. This sentiment is particularly strong among 63% of males within their friendship groups.
