The inaugural session of the Old Chapel Sessions took place at Fobairt na Rosann on March 15, 2024, marking a significant development in the local music scene. This event, organized in partnership with Over the West Online Radio, aims to create a safe, alcohol-free space for family-friendly musical performances. By prioritizing original music, the initiative seeks to cultivate an environment where artists can share their work without the interference of bar noise or other distractions.

The evening unfolded like a concert, with a seated audience allowing for an intimate atmosphere. Local country artist Conor O’Donnell served as both host and technical support, providing professional lighting and sound equipment that enhanced the experience within the historic chapel setting. O’Donnell’s efforts exemplify the collaborative spirit underpinning this initiative.

Building Community Through Music

The concept for the Old Chapel Sessions evolved from discussions between Maria McCormack of Over the West and Eirú. This initiative builds on Over the West’s ongoing commitment to alcohol-free music events, which includes the popular annual Over the West Fest held on Arranmore Island. The launch of these sessions represents a vital step in fostering grassroots music development in the Rosses and surrounding communities.

Local business support was evident, with Bridie and Charlie Sharkey of MACE Dungloe attending the event, showcasing their commitment to community arts initiatives. Attendees enjoyed refreshments, and a hamper draw added to the community atmosphere, with Bridget McGonagle winning the prize.

The diverse lineup featured a range of musical talents, including Conor O’Donnell, Breegeen Bonner, Maria McCormack, Yankton Carothers, Meabh Cannon, Owen Curran, Karen McLaughlin, Aidan O’Donnell, Ania Hornowski, and High Frequency. A highlight of the night was a performance by Owen Curran, who showcased three original songs inspired by the Rosses, illustrating a wide musical spectrum from country to rock.

Nurturing Local Talent

Reflecting the inclusive ethos of the Old Chapel Sessions, several artists took to the stage for the first time, while others brought years of experience. This blend of emerging and seasoned performers created a supportive platform that not only showcases talent but actively nurtures it. The initiative is an important cultural development for the Rosses and the broader Donegal music community.

The next Old Chapel Sessions are scheduled for April 10, 2024. Artists interested in participating are encouraged to reach out to Fobairt na Rosann or Over the West Online Radio. This ongoing series promises to further enrich the local music landscape, providing a dedicated space for original artistic expression in a welcoming environment.
