Law Named After Unborn Baby to Be Introduced by Month’s End
URGENT UPDATE: A draft law aimed at protecting unborn babies killed in traffic accidents is set to be published by the end of this month. This significant move follows the tragic loss of Jax Aylward, who died in January 2024 after a devastating crash in County Wexford.
The proposed legislation, known as Jax’s Law, is being championed by Fine Gael TDs Barry Ward and Emer Currie. If passed, it will apply to unborn babies at least 23 weeks gestation who are killed due to dangerous driving. Offenders could face penalties equivalent to those convicted of dangerous driving causing death, potentially leading to prison sentences of up to 10 years.
Saoirse Aylward expressed her hope to meet with key officials, including Minister for Road Safety Sean Canney and Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan, to discuss the bill. “The cross-party support makes clear that this is a road safety issue,” she stated, emphasizing the non-contentious nature of the legislation.
In a poignant moment, Aylward was joined by Colleen Langan, who shared the heartbreaking story of her aunt Roisin and her unborn baby Catherine, who were both killed in a road traffic collision in 2010. Langan highlighted the tragic consequences of existing laws, noting that Catherine’s death was never officially registered, leaving her unacknowledged as a victim in the Road Safety Authority’s reports.
“Babies like Jax and Catherine deserve acknowledgment and recognition,” Langan stated, underscoring the emotional impact of such losses. “Their lives are important, valued, and mattered.”
The urgency of this legislation resonates deeply within the community, as families like Aylward’s and Langan’s seek justice and recognition for their lost children. The upcoming publication of Jax’s Law represents a critical step forward in addressing road safety and the rights of unborn victims.
As these developments unfold, all eyes are on the legislators involved and the potential for the law to create meaningful change in road safety protocols. The anticipated bill could pave the way for a safer environment, ensuring that all lives, regardless of gestation, are treated with the respect and acknowledgment they deserve.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the publication date approaches.
