In response to rapidly increasing oil prices, Donegal’s Sinn Féin Deputies have condemned the significant hikes in home heating oil and motor fuel. Deputies Pearse Doherty and Padraig MacLochlainn assert that families throughout Donegal are facing undue financial strain, accusing energy companies of capitalizing on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East to inflate prices without government intervention.

Concerns Over Price Gouging

The deputies expressed alarm over the scale and speed of the price increases, which they describe as indicative of potential price gouging. Deputy Doherty highlighted that constituents have reported shocking surges in fuel costs, stating, “People across Donegal have been contacting me in shock at the huge jump in the price of home heating oil and fuel in recent days.”

He pointed out that many households are already grappling with financial pressures, and the recent price hikes exacerbate their struggles. Reports indicate that some households have seen delivery costs for heating oil rise by hundreds of euros, while drivers experience similar spikes at petrol stations.

“These hikes are happening in real time. Prices have surged by massive amounts in just days. It looks like blatant price gouging and it is a brazen rip-off happening in plain sight,” Deputy Doherty stated. He emphasized the need for the government to address what he describes as a blatant exploitation of a crisis.

Government Response Criticized

Deputy Doherty criticized the government’s approach, arguing that it has been inadequate in light of the current situation. He noted that during a recent session in the Dáil, the Taoiseach acknowledged there is “no excuse” for price gouging but simultaneously reaffirmed plans to increase the carbon tax, which could further burden families already struggling with rising costs.

Doherty remarked, “That tells you everything you need to know about how out of touch this government is with the pressure people are under.” He insists that instead of merely asking regulators to review market conditions, the government must take direct action to protect households from these escalating costs.

“Families cannot be left at the mercy of companies hiking prices while the government sits on its hands,” he continued. “The government needs to intervene to stop this rip-off and scrap plans to increase carbon tax that will only drive up the cost of heating homes even further.”

According to local reports, many families feel abandoned amid these challenges. Deputy Doherty concluded, “People in Donegal need to know that their government has their back. That has to change – and it has to change quickly.”
