On March 12, 2024, Portiuncula University Hospital will observe World Kidney Day, a global initiative aimed at increasing awareness of kidney disease and the importance of prevention and early detection. This year’s theme, “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,” underscores the relationship between environmental sustainability and kidney health, emphasizing the need for equitable and accessible kidney care.

Professor Paul O’Hara, a Consultant General Physician and Nephrologist at Portiuncula University Hospital, highlighted the significance of this theme, stating that safeguarding kidney health is intrinsically linked to environmental protection. “Raising awareness about kidney disease is vital. Early diagnosis, preventative measures, and equitable access to care can significantly improve outcomes for patients,” he said.

Understanding the Risks and Importance of Early Detection

Professor O’Hara elaborated on the urgency of early detection, noting that it not only helps preserve kidney function but also minimizes the need for complex treatments. “Environmental changes are now adding to this burden. Climate-related risks, air pollution, heat stress, dehydration, and extreme weather events compound the risks of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and accelerate its progression,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of being informed about risk factors associated with CKD, which include diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, long-term use of over-the-counter medications, heart disease, and a family history of kidney disease. “If you are over 50 or fall into a higher-risk category, it is important to speak with your GP and get screened for CKD. Early detection can significantly slow progression and improve long-term outcomes,” Professor O’Hara advised.

To commemorate World Kidney Day, the hospital’s kidney clinic will host an information awareness stand in the main foyer on March 12 from 09:00 to 12:00. Clinical staff will be present to answer questions and raise awareness about high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes, which are leading causes of kidney disease in Ireland.

Expanding Services to Meet Growing Demand

Under Professor O’Hara’s leadership, the kidney clinic at Portiuncula University Hospital continues to provide expert, patient-centered care to individuals across East Galway and Roscommon. The service offers specialized assessment and management for a wide range of kidney conditions, accepting referrals from both hospital teams and GPs to ensure timely access to treatment and support.

In a commitment to improve patient care, the clinic has expanded its services, introducing several specialist clinics. These include a newly established Clinical Nurse Specialist-led kidney clinic and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner-led Rapid Review Clinic, both aimed at enhancing access and streamlining care for patients needing urgent assessments. A dedicated Consultant-Led Clinic has also been created to assist patients preparing for dialysis, while a Conservative Care Clinic offers comprehensive support for those who choose not to pursue dialysis.

Patients requiring haemodialysis and those undergoing kidney transplantation receive their care at Merlin Park University Hospital, which ensures access to specialized renal services within the region. Between 2024 and 2025, the clinic experienced a 26% increase in new referrals and reviewed nearly 850 patients. During this period, there was also a 38% rise in patients with kidney disease receiving infusion-based therapies, signaling a growing demand for services.

The kidney day ward transitioned to a new 50-bed ward block in February 2025, which has significantly enhanced the standard of care provided to patients. Since the move, the ward has catered to over 500 patients, demonstrating its critical role in meeting the increasing demand for kidney services. Attendances surged by 42%, with more than 1,500 patient interactions recorded, illustrating the essential function of the service within the broader healthcare system.

The kidney day ward provides medical and nursing assessments, investigations, and patient education on an ambulatory and outpatient basis. Additionally, it features a dedicated ambulatory care pathway from the Emergency Department, enabling rapid assessment and treatment for patients with kidney-related conditions who do not require hospital admission.

As Portiuncula University Hospital marks World Kidney Day, the emphasis on early detection and awareness aligns with the hospital’s ongoing commitment to improving kidney health in the community.
