Urgent: Nearly 200 Irish Citizens Return Home from Oman Flight
UPDATE: Nearly 200 Irish citizens have safely returned to Ireland on a government-chartered flight from Oman, landing at Dublin Airport just before 5 AM today. This flight marks a significant repatriation effort amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Passengers aboard the flight, totaling 194, shared their harrowing experiences after being evacuated from the region. 180 of them are Irish citizens who expressed immense relief upon arrival, as their unexpected journey spanned over 52 hours.
“It’s just been a journey to get here,” one traveler told Newstalk reporter Kyle Butler. Another passenger recounted the anxiety of receiving alerts to take cover during military operations, saying, “The UAE government did an incredible job taking care of everybody.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that 1,500 people have returned on commercial flights in recent days, urging those still in the region to register their presence. Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee stated that while the situation remains “volatile,” the return of citizens brings “immense relief for their friends and families.”
Passengers on this flight were charged €800, while children under 16 traveled for free. The government has absorbed accommodation costs for passengers who were forced to stay overnight at the airport.
Despite ongoing tensions, experts emphasize the strong relationship between Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ireland. Sinead O’Carroll, editor of TheJournal.ie, noted that the bond between the United Arab Emirates and Irish people remains “extremely strong.”
As the situation develops, it is unclear how long these tensions will persist. However, officials are actively monitoring the safety of citizens and coordinating further support as necessary.
For those still in the region, the latest updates from the Department of Foreign Affairs underscore the urgency to stay informed and take action. The return of these citizens is a vital step in ensuring their safety and peace of mind during these uncertain times.
