Device Thrown at NYC Mayor’s Home Identified as Explosive
New York City Police confirmed on Sunday that a device thrown during protests outside the home of Mayor Zohran Mamdani was an explosive capable of causing significant harm. The incident occurred on Saturday at Gracie Mansion, where a jar filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, wrapped in black tape with a fuse, was ignited and thrown by a counterprotester. Fortunately, the device extinguished itself before it could detonate, as stated by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch during a press conference.
Two individuals are currently in custody in connection with this incident. The explosive device was one of two thrown during the protests, which featured opposing groups. The second device is still under examination by authorities. Commissioner Tisch reported that approximately 20 individuals, led by far-right activist Jake Lang, protested against what they claim is an Islamic “takeover” of New York City and public prayer by Muslims.
At the time of the protest, it is believed that Mamdani and his wife were not at home. In a statement issued on Sunday, Mamdani condemned the actions of Lang’s group but emphasized that the violence that ensued was far more troubling. He remarked, “Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.”
The protest led by Lang was met with a far larger counterprotest, consisting of around 125 individuals who aimed to oppose the far-right gathering. Commissioner Tisch confirmed that Emir Balat, 18, was among the counterprotesters and was responsible for throwing the explosive. After throwing the device, which rolled near police officers before extinguishing, Balat fled the scene and subsequently lit and discarded a second device.
Both Balat and another individual identified as Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested at the scene. The New York City Police Department is collaborating with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice to further investigate the incident. Tisch indicated that there is currently no evidence linking the event to tensions related to the U.S. attack on Iran, although the investigation is ongoing.
This incident highlights the growing concerns regarding safety at public demonstrations and the potential for violence, underscoring the need for vigilance in managing protests and counterprotests in urban settings. As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on ensuring the safety of all participants and the community at large.
