Urgent Update: Aggression Surges in Ireland’s Courts Amid Threats

BREAKING: Ireland’s courts are facing a disturbing rise in aggression, with reports of a death threat to court staff and alarming incidents prompting judges to demand police presence during sessions. In a shocking revelation, 23 security and safety issues were logged internally by the Courts Service last year, with some leading to arrests. Last year alone, members of the Fórsa trade union reported 36 incidents of violence, harassment, and aggression within the courts, highlighting a troubling trend that is not confined to Dublin’s major courts. A District Court judge expressed grave concerns, stating, “There is no doubt about it. People are just, generally speaking, aggressive now.” This stark shift in behavior is believed to stem from social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a marked decline in respect within courtrooms.

Judges are increasingly calling for garda (police) presence in court, with one judge emphasizing that many colleagues refuse to sit without officers present. “The day you are most at risk is family law day,” the judge warned, underscoring the heightened dangers posed during sensitive cases.

Serious incidents have been recorded across various courthouses, including locations in Limerick, Sligo, and Clonmel. Notably, a member of the public emailed the Dun Laoghaire court office with threats to kill, while another incident involved a solicitor reporting threats made against a judge via email. The escalating situations have led to panic buttons being activated, as staff members face increasingly volatile individuals.

The President of the High Court, Mr Justice David Barniville, also issued a warning about the growing unpredictability of litigants, reiterating the need for respect within the judicial system to maintain public confidence. He stated, “If public confidence in the administration of justice is to be maintained, it is paramount that the authority of the Court is respected.”

Concerns are not limited to courtroom conduct; incidents of aggression have also occurred outside court settings, with reports detailing fights and verbal abuse among litigants and their supporters. The Courts Service is actively reviewing security measures, including enhanced CCTV and access control, in response to this troubling trend.
