Trump Claims US Forces Obliterated Military Targets on Kharg Island
President Donald Trump announced that US military forces have “obliterated” key military targets on Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports. This declaration follows the United States’ decision to deploy an additional 2,500 Marines and an amphibious assault ship to the Middle East. The strikes occurred shortly after the commencement of hostilities on February 28, 2025, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions.
Kharg Island is pivotal to Iran’s economy, facilitating approximately 90 percent of its oil exports. Located 26 kilometers (16 miles) from the Iranian coast and over 480 kilometers northwest of the Strait of Hormuz, it serves as a vital terminal for oil shipments, accommodating tankers too large for the mainland’s shallow waters. Recent data from TankerTracker.com and Kpler indicate that Iran has maintained oil exports between 1.1 million and 1.5 million barrels per day, underscoring the island’s strategic importance.
Military Action and Iranian Response
According to a report from JP Morgan, Kharg Island has a storage capacity of roughly 30 million barrels, with about 18 million barrels of crude stored as of early March. The last significant military action against the island occurred during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s when extensive bombing raids caused severe damage, although Iran subsequently rebuilt its infrastructure.
In response to the recent attacks, Iran’s Armed Forces Unified Combatant issued a warning. They stated that any aggression towards Iran’s energy facilities would prompt retaliation against the infrastructure of oil companies cooperating with the United States in the region. The military’s Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters emphasized that such infrastructure would be “immediately destroyed and turned into a pile of ashes” if Iran’s energy facilities were targeted.
Trump elaborated on the military action in a social media post, asserting that the US Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in Middle Eastern history. He refrained from targeting the island’s oil infrastructure for now but cautioned that any interference with the free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz would lead to a reassessment of this decision.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported at least 15 explosions on Kharg Island, with thick smoke billowing over the area. While the strikes targeted military installations including an air defense facility, a naval base, and an airport control tower, Iranian reports maintain that no damage occurred to the oil infrastructure itself.
As the situation develops, the global community is closely monitoring the implications of these military actions for regional stability and international oil markets. With tensions high, the response from Tehran and its potential impact on global energy supplies remain critical concerns for analysts and policymakers alike.
