Attract Robins This Spring: Simple Tips for Your Garden
As spring approaches, many garden enthusiasts are eager to welcome robins to their outdoor spaces. A straightforward method to attract these birds involves placing common fruits, particularly apples, outdoors. This advice, shared by birdwatching expert Martin Cormican on his Instagram account, offers practical tips for creating a bird-friendly environment.
March marks a significant time for gardeners as warmer weather encourages outdoor activity. As people begin to spend more time in their gardens, they can enhance the experience by inviting wildlife into their surroundings. According to Cormican, enticing robins requires more than just fruit; it involves providing the right food, creating a safe habitat, and ensuring protection from potential predators.
Cormican emphasizes the importance of variety in the diet offered to birds. In a recent post, he wrote, “Offer a variety of food/seed mixes. Use a mix of seeds, including sunflower seeds, nyjer seeds, millet, and cracked corn to attract different bird species.” He also highlights the significance of high-energy foods, particularly during colder months, recommending suet and fat balls for birds such as woodpeckers and nuthatches.
To specifically attract robins, offering slices of apples, oranges, or berries can be particularly effective. Robins are known for their preference for fruits, especially during the spring season, making apples a favored choice. Gardeners can simply place small, fresh apple slices on bird platform feeders to draw these birds in.
It is essential to ensure that the fruit remains fresh and uncontaminated. Mouldy fruit should be promptly removed and replaced with new offerings. Gardeners are advised to avoid high-sugar fruits like grapes, which may not be as beneficial for robins. Alternative options such as dried fruits like raisins, as well as finely chopped pears and oranges, can also be appealing to these birds.
With Cormican’s guidance, attracting robins to your garden this March can be both simple and rewarding. By providing fresh fruits and ensuring a safe environment, individuals can enjoy the presence of these delightful birds while enhancing their overall gardening experience.
