Trump Calls on Nations to Secure Vital Shipping Lane Amid Conflict
US President Donald Trump has urged global powers to assist in securing the crucial shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been jeopardized by ongoing military conflicts involving Iran. The call for international cooperation comes as the situation escalates in the region, with recent attacks on the US embassy in Baghdad and key energy facilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
As the war with Iran continues, the Gulf region remains on edge, significantly impacting the global economy. Following a series of strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian military targets, tensions have surged, pushing oil prices up by 40%. This escalation has led to Iran restricting access to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for global oil shipments, and launching attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure.
On Saturday, journalists from the AFP news agency reported seeing plumes of black smoke rising from Fujairah, home to a major Emirati oil storage and export terminal. This occurred shortly after Iranian military officials warned UAE civilians to steer clear of port areas. The US embassy in Iraq was targeted by a drone strike, marking the second such incident during the ongoing conflict, while the Emirati consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan also faced attacks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that multiple nations, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK, would likely deploy naval vessels to help keep the Strait open and secure. Earlier, he had announced that the US Navy would “very soon” begin escorting tankers through the Strait.
On Friday, US forces conducted airstrikes on Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports. Trump asserted that these strikes “obliterated every military target,” while sparing Iran’s energy facilities. Analysts suggest that the attack could mark a significant turning point, with both the US and Iran intensifying their military operations in an effort to gain leverage.
As the conflict rages on, Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz described the current phase as decisive. He cautioned, however, that hostilities would persist “as long as necessary.” Despite facing overwhelming military power from the US and Israel, Iran remains resolute in its defense efforts. Reports indicate that missile launches from Iran were detected near Jerusalem, leading to blasts heard by AFP journalists in the area.
In response to the escalating violence, the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has called on Iran to avoid targeting Gulf states that support its cause. While Hamas affirmed Iran’s right to defend itself, this marks a rare divergence between the two allies.
The conflict has resulted in significant humanitarian impacts. Iran’s health ministry claims that over 1,200 people have been killed due to US and Israeli attacks, with estimates suggesting up to 3.2 million people displaced, as reported by the UN refugee agency. The Pentagon has confirmed that US and Israeli forces have struck more than 15,000 targets across Iran, with the first six days of fighting alone costing the US $11.3 billion and resulting in the deaths of 13 military personnel.
In a broader context, the war has also reignited tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Hezbollah has launched attacks against Israeli positions, leading to a severe Israeli response that has resulted in substantial casualties in Lebanon.
The international community is closely monitoring these developments. During a visit to Beirut, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that “diplomatic avenues are available” to resolve the ongoing hostilities. As the situation evolves, the calls for cooperation and resolution intensify, highlighting the urgent need for stability in this strategically significant region.
