Limerick Writers’ Centre Launches Urgent Poetry Month Events
UPDATE: The Limerick Writers’ Centre just announced an exciting lineup for April Is Poetry Month 2026, set to run from April 1–30. This initiative positions Limerick at the heart of Ireland’s literary scene, showcasing over 15 free events designed to engage the community and celebrate the power of poetry.
April kicks off with a must-attend reading by poet John D Kelly on April 1 at 7:30 PM in The White House Bar on O’Connell Street. This venue is renowned for its literary gatherings and sets the perfect tone for the month ahead. Following Kelly’s reading, an open-mic session invites audience participation, ensuring that everyone has a voice.
On April 7, Quay Books will host “A Garden from a Hundred Seeds,” a unique poetry installation inspired by James Fenton at 1 PM. This immersive experience encourages visitors to engage with poetry in a reflective setting, showcasing the diverse presentations Limerick has to offer.
The People’s Museum of Limerick at 2 Pery Square serves as the program’s anchor throughout April. Events include a reading on April 8 featuring poets Eoin Devereux, Michael Dooley, and Marie Studer at 7:30 PM. This intimate venue enhances the experience, allowing audiences to connect deeply with contemporary voices.
A highlight of the month occurs on April 9 at 6:30 PM with “Fifty Years Speaking,” commemorating 50 years of the Stony Thursday Book. This gathering at The Belltable will celebrate the legacy of one of Ireland’s most esteemed poetry publications, reflecting Limerick’s ongoing commitment to poetry.
From April 10 onward, the program intensifies with multiple book launches, starting with John Liddy’s “True to Form” at The People’s Museum at 7:30 PM. These events highlight the importance of new works and the creative labor that brings them to life.
The Desmond O’Grady Memorial Reading on April 16 honors a cherished literary figure, featuring Sean Lysaght and others at 7:30 PM. This event not only remembers O’Grady but also announces the winner of the Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Competition, fostering new talent in the community.
Throughout the month, The People’s Museum will host various readings, including “Unsinkable – Poetry Inspired by the Titanic” on April 22. The calendar is packed, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere where poetry thrives and audiences engage.
On April 23, Limerick will celebrate UNESCO World Book Day with “Books & Roses” at 6:30 PM, linking local literary culture to the global literary community. This event highlights poetry’s ability to bridge communities across borders.
As the month closes, the final events on April 29 and April 30 will feature readings from Cork poets and an online session by Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha, ensuring a community-focused finish to the month.
Additionally, The Poetry Wall will be on display at The People’s Museum, allowing visitors to engage with poetry daily throughout the month. This continuous presence reinforces the idea that Limerick is not only participating in Ireland’s literary culture but actively shaping it.
