Kevin Long Returns to League of Ireland with Waterford FC
Former Ireland international Kevin Long has rejoined the League of Ireland, signing with Waterford FC. The defender returns to his home league after more than 16 years away, having initially left Cork City to pursue a career in England, where he notably played for Burnley FC in the Premier League.
During his time at Burnley, Long made 48 appearances across seven seasons, showcasing his skills at the highest level of English football. In 2023, he transitioned to Birmingham City and later to Toronto FC in Major League Soccer before returning to Ireland.
Long expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating, “I’m excited to be here and looking forward to getting going. I’ve been away from Ireland for a long time, so it feels good to be home. Hopefully, I can bring my experience to this club and we can start climbing up the table.”
Long’s Impact on Waterford FC
Waterford’s head coach Jon Daly praised Long’s experience and leadership, highlighting the positive influence he is expected to have on the team. “Kevin has fantastic experience at the highest levels of the game and brings real leadership, quality, and professionalism to the squad,” Daly remarked. He added, “Kevin is a player who will set standards every day, and I’m confident his presence will make a huge impact both on and off the pitch for this group.”
As Waterford prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of Long is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team’s performance. The club aims to improve its standings in the league, and having a player of Long’s caliber is expected to contribute significantly to their efforts.
Long’s return marks a significant chapter in his career, one that is anticipated to resonate not just within the club but also among fans who have followed his journey from Cork to the international stage. With 17 senior caps for Ireland, Long brings a wealth of experience that could be pivotal in Waterford’s campaign.
As the season approaches, all eyes will be on Waterford FC to see how the integration of Kevin Long influences their performance and ambitions in the League of Ireland. The excitement surrounding his return reflects not only his personal journey but also the hopes of a club eager to reclaim its competitive edge.
