A recent climb of Errigal Mountain in Donegal has rekindled interest in this popular outdoor activity, drawing visitors from across Ireland and beyond. With its height of 751 metres (2,464 feet), Errigal stands as the highest peak in County Donegal. This summer, many are seizing the opportunity to experience the breathtaking scenery and invigorating challenge it offers.

On a Saturday close to lunchtime, visitors made their way toward the mountain, passing the entrance to Glenveagh National Park and heading towards the Poison Glen in Dunlewey. The influx of hikers was evident as the modest car park filled quickly, showcasing license plates from as far as Germany and from nearby communities like Termon, identified by GAA club colours.

The experience of climbing Errigal has significantly improved thanks to a newly constructed pathway, which cost over €650,000. Previous attempts to reach the foot of the mountain often involved navigating boggy terrain, making the journey arduous. Now, families can enjoy the hike together, including children, grandparents, and even pets, all of whom are seen completing the climb.

As climbers set out, it is essential to approach the ascent at a comfortable pace. While there are steep sections, the new pathway has increased safety for those tackling the mountain. Proper footwear and warm clothing are crucial, as conditions can change rapidly at the summit.

On a bustling Bank Holiday weekend, visitors at the top can expect to encounter fellow adventurers, including well-known figures such as former Kerry footballer Kieran Donaghy. The views from the summit are often breathtaking, with glimpses of Tory Island and the Back Strand in Falcarragh, even on days when mist obscures the landscape.

Descending the mountain requires equal caution, as loose chippings and varying underfoot conditions can make the journey treacherous. Hikers are reminded to take their time, ensuring that their experience remains enjoyable and safe.

Climbing Errigal has become a quintessential activity on the Donegal “to-do” list, alongside enjoying local sports, tasting regional delicacies, or listening to traditional music. As summer approaches its end, now is the time to tick this memorable experience off your list. With every ascent, climbers not only conquer a physical challenge but also create lasting memories.
