Retailer Calls for Action Against Parents Teaching Theft in Limerick

A retailer in Limerick has raised alarm over a troubling trend where parents are allegedly coaching their children to steal from shops. Shane Gleeson, who operates several Spar branches in the city, has described this behaviour as “child abuse” and is urging the child protection agency, Tusla, to intervene. He asserts that such actions do not just harm the children involved but also jeopardize their futures.

Mr. Gleeson has encountered firsthand instances of parents instructing their children on how to shoplift. He recounted overhearing a parent telling a child, “stick it in your pocket, Jimmy, he won’t see you now.” This behaviour is not only damaging to the children but also sets a dangerous precedent, he argues. “If you’re teaching a child to steal, you’re abusing the child, because you’re destroying their future,” he stated.

Incidents of Shoplifting in Limerick

In a particularly alarming incident captured on CCTV at Mr. Gleeson’s store in Castletroy, a girl no older than eight was seen placing a can of the energy drink Red Bull into a buggy. Accompanied by an adult woman and a younger child, the group was observed stuffing additional items, including meat and butter, into a rucksack hidden at the back of the buggy.

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating this incident after receiving footage from the retailer. Mr. Gleeson reported that he pursued the individuals involved and managed to recover some items, although they ultimately left with around €45 worth of goods.

Mr. Gleeson believes that addressing these thefts is crucial to preventing a broader problem. He mentioned that discussions with fellow business owners reveal similar patterns of theft occurring in other shops across Limerick. “They have no moral compass of any kind whatsoever,” he concluded, referring to the parents of the children involved, whom he claims have been stealing since their own youth.

The situation highlights a troubling trend that not only affects retailers but also raises significant concerns about the long-term impact on the children being taught to engage in such activities. Mr. Gleeson’s call for intervention from Tusla underscores the need for community awareness and action to address this issue.
