Irish Kickers Shine as NFL Pre-Season Heats Up with Jets Focus

The NFL is on the cusp of a significant expansion, with Europe set to host six games, including the inaugural match in Dublin on September 28, 2024. As excitement builds around this historic event, Irish players are also making waves in the league, particularly during the current pre-season games.
Irish Kickers Making Their Mark
Three Irish kickers are vying for starting positions in the NFL, each expected to take the field during Week 2 of the pre-season. Mark McNamee has experienced a uniquely challenging journey to the NFL. Arriving in the United States just hours before his debut with the Green Bay Packers against the New York Jets, McNamee successfully executed several kick-offs. Although he is likely to serve as a backup this season, he made the most of his opportunity.
“I landed at about 11pm [the night before the game],” McNamee shared with reporters post-game. “The Packers and the immigration lawyers have been great with me in just getting it done. It felt like a long time, but it was only two weeks. I’m really grateful to be here. It feels like it’s the beginning, it’s a good moment for me and my family.”
Meanwhile, Jude McAtamney, from Derry, demonstrated his skill by making a 43-yard field goal and an extra point in the New York Giants’ victory over the Buffalo Bills. He is expected to continue showcasing his abilities against the Jets this weekend. Charlie Smyth, in his second year with the New Orleans Saints, also impressed during a 27-13 loss to the LA Chargers, successfully executing a 50-yard field goal that added to his highlight reel.
New York Jets Shift Focus with Justin Fields
The New York Jets have shifted their focus this pre-season, especially following their lackluster performance last year, where they finished with a 5-12 record. The arrival of quarterback Justin Fields has injected new energy into the team. During their recent match against the Green Bay Packers, the Jets displayed signs of improvement, particularly on defense.
“There’s no question about his unique athletic ability,” stated Rick Spielman, senior football advisor for the Jets. “What you’re seeing now in today’s game, with players like Lamar Jackson and Bo Nix, is that they possess both arm talent and mobility. We feel that Justin Fields fits that type of quarterback.”
Spielman also addressed the upcoming games in Europe, asserting that the roster decisions remain unaffected by the location. “No, playing in London doesn’t affect our roster at all. You’re still trying to put your best 53-man roster together, whether we’re playing in the UK or Mars,” he clarified. “It’s an excellent opportunity to engage with fans and perform on the world stage.”
Dallas Cowboys: A Year-Round Drama
In other NFL news, a documentary series titled “America’s Team, The Gambler and his Cowboys” will debut next week on Netflix, focusing on the storied history of the Dallas Cowboys. Central to the narrative is team owner Jerry Jones, whose off-field antics often overshadow the team’s performance.
Jones has been candid about his approach to maintaining the spotlight on the Cowboys. “I do believe if we’re not being looked at, then I’ll do my part to get us looked at,” he stated. He emphasized the Cowboys’ appeal as a continuous source of media interest, describing the team as “a soap opera 365 days a year.”
While fans typically desire a focus on winning, Jones has embraced the entertainment aspect of the franchise. “There’s sizzle, there’s emotion, and if you will, there’s controversy. That controversy is good stuff in terms of keeping and having people’s attention,” he added.
As the NFL pre-season unfolds, the performances of Irish players and the strategic shifts within teams like the Jets and Cowboys will be pivotal storylines to watch. With the inaugural Dublin game approaching, the league continues to expand its international reach and engagement.
