Askeaton Park Set for Major Upgrade with New Facilities

Plans for a significant enhancement of Askeaton’s main public green space have been unveiled, linked to upcoming infrastructure works by Irish Water. The proposals aim to improve Askeaton Park, which is adjacent to the town’s swimming pool, through the construction of a new pumping station and a large underground stormwater tank.

During a recent briefing, council officials presented these landscape proposals to local representatives, emphasizing that while the essential wastewater infrastructure will necessitate digging up parts of the green area, the project is expected to provide lasting recreational benefits for the community.

Key elements of the proposed upgrades include the establishment of new walking and cycling paths, improved boundary fencing, enhanced seating options, and additional planting aimed at boosting biodiversity. These efforts align with the Tidy Towns initiative, which focuses on community development and environmental preservation.

Local feedback has been integral to shaping the proposals. In response to concerns raised by the Town Team regarding anti-social behavior and visibility issues in certain areas of the park, plans also include installing lighting and integrating natural play elements. Future-proofing measures for CCTV will further enhance safety within the park.

To mitigate the visual impact of the stormwater tank, council staff indicated that it will be screened with fencing, trees, and hedging. Additionally, Irish Water has committed to funding landscaping works up to the sub-base level, while the council will oversee the final surfacing.

Engagement with local groups, including the adjacent tennis club, has been highlighted as essential to coordinate efforts effectively. A planning application for the project is anticipated in 2026, with construction expected to commence in late 2027.

Elected officials expressed broad support for the proposals, recognizing Askeaton Park as a vital recreational space that should be developed alongside the recently reopened swimming pool. The improvements are seen as an opportunity to enhance community engagement and promote outdoor activities in the area.

Askeaton Park’s upgrade not only reflects a commitment to improving local infrastructure but also underscores the importance of community input in shaping public spaces for future generations.
