Buncrana Invites Artists to Revitalize Night Economy with New Grants
Donegal County Council has launched Phase Three of the Buncrana Night-Time Economy Grant Scheme, focusing on stimulating evening events and festivals. This initiative encourages businesses, community groups, artists, musicians, and performers to present creative ideas that will enhance Buncrana’s atmosphere after dark.
As one of only nine towns selected for the national Night-Time Economy pilot, Buncrana is at the forefront of transforming rural public spaces and evening activities. Phase Three aims to support a diverse range of events that will enrich the town’s cultural life, boost the local economy, and invite people of all ages to explore Buncrana at night.
Funding Opportunities for Creative Initiatives
The grant scheme offers two tiers of funding: Tier 1 provides grants of up to €500 for smaller events, while Tier 2 offers grants ranging from €500 to €4,000 for larger festivals and activities.
John G. McLaughlin, Chief Executive of Donegal County Council, emphasized the importance of community collaboration in revitalizing Buncrana’s nighttime offerings. “This initiative shows what’s possible when communities come together with creativity and vision. The Night-Time Economy pilot is not only revitalising Buncrana’s evenings, it’s setting a national example for how smaller towns can grow in a way that’s inclusive, safe, and sustainable,” he stated.
Sophie Gallagher, Night-Time Economy Advisor for Buncrana, highlighted the ongoing transformation of the town’s nightlife. “Buncrana’s night-time scene is going from strength to strength, and that’s thanks to the incredible people who are creating and delivering events in Buncrana after 6pm. Their creativity, commitment, and hard work are helping the town truly come alive at night-time.”
Building on Previous Successes
Previous phases of the grant scheme attracted a wide array of applications from sectors including the arts, hospitality, and community groups. The aim of Phase Three is to build on this momentum and inspire even more ambitious event ideas and collaborations throughout the local area.
Interested participants, whether hospitality businesses with innovative concepts, festival organisers, or artists looking to showcase their talents, have the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant future of “Buncrana by Night.” Events must take place between April and October 2026, with the application deadline set for March 27, 2026, at 12 noon.
Application forms are available on the Donegal County Council website at www.donegalcoco.ie/nte. For further assistance, interested parties can contact Sophie Gallagher via email at [email protected].
The Buncrana Night-Time Economy initiative is funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, and represents a concerted effort by Donegal County Council to foster a vibrant and inclusive night-time culture in the community.
