Derry Celebrates Opening of 40 New Social Homes at Daisyfield Court
The completion of the Daisyfield Court development in Derry marks a significant milestone for the city, as it introduces 40 new social homes on Letterkenny Road. The event, which celebrated the project’s success, gathered local residents, community representatives, and project partners to acknowledge the importance of affordable housing in the region.
Developed by GEDA, the project features a diverse mix of housing options. These include own-door duplex homes, Category 1 apartments, general needs accommodation, and four wheelchair-accessible apartments. This range is designed to cater to various needs within the community, ensuring that as many individuals and families as possible can benefit from the new homes.
Community Engagement and Support Initiatives
Throughout the construction of Daisyfield Court, GEDA emphasized the importance of community engagement. They collaborated with Long Tower Primary School to foster educational activities and community involvement. Notably, pupils participated in a hoarding artwork project aimed at instilling a sense of local connection. Additionally, GEDA provided child-friendly health and safety talks, featuring their mascot, GEDA Goodbear, to promote safe working practices in an approachable manner.
GEDA’s commitment to community values is reflected in the project’s outstanding achievement of a perfect score of 45 out of 45 under the Considerate Constructors Scheme. This score highlights the team’s dedication to being respectful neighbors and making a positive impact in the local area.
Quality and Future Impact
Damian Murray, Build Director at GEDA, expressed pride in the project, stating, “We are proud to officially hand over Daisyfield Court on the Letterkenny Road on behalf of our valued client, Radius Housing. The project has been delivered to an exceptional standard, with energy-efficient construction methods that will help ensure long-term affordability and comfort for residents.”
This development aims to address Derry’s pressing housing needs. Denise Quinn, Senior Head of Development at Radius Housing, emphasized the significance of this initiative, “This development is about real delivery for a city that has an acute housing need. Radius Housing’s Letterkenny Road development will provide safe, high-quality homes for individuals and families who need them most, right in the heart of Derry.”
Quinn further highlighted the variety of homes available, including accessible and wheelchair-designed accommodation, affirming the commitment to meeting a wide range of housing needs and ensuring residents can live independently and with dignity.
As Derry continues to confront housing challenges, the completion of Daisyfield Court stands as a beacon of hope, illustrating the collaborative efforts between local organizations and the community to foster a vibrant and inclusive living environment.
