The Donegal Railway Heritage Museum has been awarded €7,200 in funding from the Shared Island Civic Society Fund. This financial support will be utilized for the Reconnecting Through Culture project, a collaborative initiative with the Alley Theatre in Strabane. The project aims to foster cross-border connections by exploring the historical impact of transport technologies on economic, social, and cultural transformations.

Project Overview and Objectives

Once vital links between communities in Donegal and Tyrone, the railways closed in the 1950s, disrupting connections that had long existed. The Reconnecting Through Culture project seeks to creatively revive these relationships by examining how transport has shaped artistic and cultural expression over time.

As part of this initiative, the museum will host a range of activities, including a Schools Art Competition. Students will be invited to create visual art depicting a chosen mode of transport, accompanied by a description of its significance. For instance, a family car packed for a holiday might symbolize summer freedom, while a ship battling stormy seas could represent humanity’s struggle against nature.

Additionally, the project features the Station Sessions, where four musical acts from both sides of the border will perform train songs at the museum. These performances will be filmed and combined with written materials on the history of train songs, culminating in an online multimedia exhibition hosted on the museum’s website.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

In Autumn 2026, the Alley Theatre will host a day-long event celebrating community exchange and cultural programming. This event will include an exhibition showcasing art competition submissions, a talk and performance focused on train songs, the launch of the online exhibition, and a guest lecture on the significance of transport in Irish history and culture.

Marty Gilroy, manager of the Donegal Railway Heritage Museum, expressed enthusiasm for the funding and its implications. “We are extremely happy to have received the support of the Shared Island Civic Society Fund for this project,” he stated. “Its cultural and creative focus reflects one of the key principles of the new Strategic Plan that we will release in the coming weeks.”

Gilroy emphasized the museum’s commitment to highlighting how developments in transport infrastructure have influenced local history and artistic expression. He hopes that this project will forge lasting connections between Donegal and Tyrone, particularly with the museum’s partners at the Alley Theatre.

The Reconnecting Through Culture project stands as a testament to the potential of cultural initiatives to bridge communities and revive historical ties, fostering a deeper understanding of shared heritage through artistic exploration.
