East Donegal Café Domsay’s to Close on Christmas Eve After 14 Years
A popular café in Raphoe, Domsay’s Café, will close its doors permanently on December 24, 2023, after 14 years of service. Owners Domsay and Sally McCafferty announced the decision due to the unsustainable rise in business costs, stating that it has become increasingly difficult to maintain operations amidst these financial pressures.
In a heartfelt message to the community, the McCaffertys expressed their gratitude for the support they received throughout their years in business. “It has come to the time we have to announce the closure of Domsay café due to the high cost of running a small business,” the couple shared. They specifically thanked their landlord, Declan Reynolds, for his ongoing support, as well as their customers, suppliers, and accountant.
Reflecting on their journey, Domsay and Sally highlighted the importance of their staff, particularly Philomena, who has been with the café since it opened. “We have had the pleasure of meeting some lovely people and made some good friends, some of whom have sadly passed away,” they noted.
End of an Era for the Local Community
The closure of Domsay’s Café marks a significant moment for Raphoe, where the establishment has been a cherished gathering place known for its breakfasts, home baking, and hearty meals. The café has played a vital role in the daily lives of both locals and visitors alike, fostering a sense of community over the years.
In their farewell message, the McCaffertys offered words of encouragement to other small businesses in the area. “We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and a happy new year. To all the small business in Raphoe, we wish you all success in the new year,” they said, emphasizing their hope for the future of local enterprise.
The decision to close comes as many small business owners face similar challenges due to rising operational costs. Domsay’s Café’s closure serves as a poignant reminder of the difficulties faced by independent businesses and the impact they have on local communities. As the café prepares to close its doors, it leaves behind a legacy of warmth, friendship, and community spirit that will be missed by many.
