GAA Acknowledges 2027 Integration Deadline as Unfeasible

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) has officially recognized that the 2027 deadline for the integration of its organization with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) and the Camogie Association is no longer realistic. During a meeting held on December 19, 2023, the GAA Management Committee reached a consensus that the timeline for a complete merger is impractical, prompting a shift towards a more phased approach.

This integration project is viewed as having “utmost strategic importance” for the GAA, but the Management Committee believes it is necessary to manage risks effectively and address any legitimate concerns from stakeholders. The chairperson of the integration steering committee, Mary McAleese, attended the meeting and expressed disappointment with the committee’s conclusion. She challenged their assertion regarding the timeline, reinforcing her stance that the 2027 deadline remains achievable.

Just two days prior, McAleese had participated in an Oireachtas meeting alongside GAA President Jarlath Burns and Director General Tom Ryan. In that session, she asserted to members of parliament that the integration timeline was “realisable.” A memorandum from the steering committee had previously reiterated the goal of achieving integration by 2027, further emphasizing the commitment to this timeline.

As part of its efforts to outline the integration vision, the steering committee plans to conduct a five-stop roadshow in 2024. This initiative aims to engage with stakeholders and gather feedback on the draft proposals for merging the three organizations. The committee stated, “As we begin this year, the process leading to integration of the Camogie Association, GAA, and LGFA will enter a new and critical phase of engagement designed to shape the future structure of the new GAA in 2027.”

The steering group has conducted comprehensive analysis and consultations over the past two years. The upcoming phase aims to encourage input from officers and members across all three associations, ensuring that the integration process is inclusive and respectful. This feedback will be central to refining the proposed structures, allowing for broad support as integration approaches.

Despite these efforts, reports indicate that counties have been slow to establish the integration workgroups, which were meant to include members from each of the three boards. They were instructed to form these groups in December, with meetings expected to commence this month.

The GAA Management Committee, known as Coiste Bainisti, holds responsibility for managing the affairs of the organization and implementing policies determined by Congress. All sub-committees report directly to this committee, which has the authority to recommend policy changes to Ard Chomhairle.

The next meeting of the Management Committee is scheduled for the following Friday, just ahead of the Central Council meeting. The reaction of the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) to the recent developments will be closely monitored. Over the past year, GPA Chief Executive Tom Parsons has voiced frustration regarding the integration process, highlighting a lack of engagement with the steering committee. In October, the GPA expressed concerns about being “mostly in the dark” regarding the progress of integration.

GPA Joint National Chairperson Aisling Maher also raised doubts about the feasibility of the 2027 deadline, emphasizing the need for improved communication with all members, not just inter-county players. The GPA was instrumental in prioritizing integration, having submitted a motion in 2021 that was subsequently adopted by the congresses of the three bodies.

As the GAA embarks on this critical phase of integration, the organization faces the challenge of ensuring that all voices are heard, laying the groundwork for a unified future in Gaelic sports.
