Kilkenny Unveils Plans for New Café Kiosk and Public Space Upgrade
Kilkenny County Council has announced plans to enhance the St Mary’s Laneway and surrounding outdoor amenity space in Kilkenny City. The proposed scheme includes the installation of a serviced café kiosk and the automation of the pedestrian gate adjacent to the Tholsel, as well as various infrastructural improvements.
The initiative aims to renew existing pavements and drainage systems, along with boundary treatments, street furniture, public lighting, and feature lighting. These upgrades are designed to create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
Enhancing the Outdoor Experience
In addition to the café kiosk, the project will focus on both soft and hard landscaping works to improve the outdoor amenity space around the Medieval Mile Museum. This area includes existing hardstanding and gravelled surfaces, as well as a mix of historic and modern paving. The site is home to significant burial grounds featuring numerous historic headstones and intricately carved tombs.
This enhancement project is part of a broader effort to promote tourism and community engagement in Kilkenny. By improving public spaces, the council hopes to attract more visitors and foster a vibrant atmosphere in the city.
Public Consultation and Engagement
As part of the consultation process, Kilkenny County Council has organized a public information and drop-in session. This event will take place at the Kilkenny River Court Hotel, located at The Bridge, John Street, Kilkenny City, R95 Y104, on Friday, January 9, 2024, from 16:00 to 19:00. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their views on the proposed improvements.
Engagement with local residents is crucial to the success of this initiative, as their insights will help shape the final design and execution of the project. The council aims to create a space that reflects the needs and desires of the community while preserving Kilkenny’s rich historical legacy.
By investing in public amenities and enhancing outdoor spaces, Kilkenny County Council is taking significant steps towards creating a more livable and attractive city for both residents and tourists. The proposed café kiosk and infrastructure upgrades are expected to contribute positively to the local economy and community spirit.
