Limerick farmers will benefit from a total of €400,884 in payments as part of the second year of the Dairy Beef Welfare Scheme. Local TDs Niall Collins and Patrick O’Donovan have confirmed that payments will be distributed to 603 farmers in the region. This financial support aims to enhance animal health and welfare within the national dairy herd by promoting the use of genetically superior beef sires.

The payments are part of a broader initiative under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan. Eligible participants will receive €20 per calf for those born on their farms between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025. This scheme is designed to encourage a more integrated approach between dairy and beef farming, benefiting both sectors.

In a statement, Niall Collins emphasized the importance of the scheme. “It supports both dairy and beef farmers in Limerick who recognize the benefits from the greater integration of the beef and dairy herds that this scheme supports,” he said. Collins’ remarks highlight the initiative’s focus on improving the overall health of livestock.

Patrick O’Donovan also voiced his support for the funding announcement, stating, “This funding underlines Fine Gael’s commitment to backing beef and dairy farmers in Limerick with practical schemes delivering real value for families.” O’Donovan’s comments reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to provide tangible assistance to local agricultural communities.

The financial support comes at a crucial time for farmers, who face various challenges in maintaining livestock health and productivity. By incentivizing the use of quality sires, the Dairy Beef Welfare Scheme aims to improve the genetics of the herd, ultimately enhancing productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector.

As payments are processed, Limerick farmers are encouraged to ensure their eligibility to benefit from this initiative. The prompt allocation of these funds is expected to have a positive impact on local farming families, further strengthening the agricultural framework in the region.
